I recently got a Sony a6400 mirrorless camera that I want to use to record myself singing covers. What type of microphone would you recommend to get good quality audio synced with the video? I'd prefer something that can mount on the camera. Budget is around $200. Thanks for any advice!

TheΒ Rode VideoMic Pro+Β is an excellent choice. It's a shotgun mic that plugs right into your camera's hot shoe and 3.5mm mic input. Great sound quality for the price at around $200. I use it with my Sony a6500 for vlogging and it performs really well. The built-in Rycote shock mount rejects handling noise nicely. Highly recommended.

Get the new released DJI Mic 2.

@many-sony Yes, the DJI Mic 2 is very compact, and easy to use.

I uses Sennheiser MKE 400 Shotgun Microphone for my Sony a6500. Works great.

Just saw this... honestly if youre doing singing, a standard shotgun is okay but I found myself way more satisfied with something more versatile. Ive been shooting on the a6400 for years now and the preamp can be a bit noisy if you arent careful. Heres what worked for me after trying a bunch of setups:

  • The Rode VideoMic NTG is what I finally settled on. It has an internal amp so you can turn the camera gain way down, which keeps the audio clean. Plus, you can plug it straight into your computer via USB for recording covers directly into a DAW when you arent on the move.
  • If you want to save some serious money, look for a used Shure VP83 LensHopper. They are built like bricks and have a really warm, natural sound that fits singing way better than the sharper shotguns people usually suggest.
  • If the budget is really tight, the Takstar SGC-598 is a classic for a reason. Its dirt cheap and honestly sounds surprisingly good for the price if you just need to get started. Honestly, the biggest pro tip is just getting the mic off the camera shoe if possible. I use a cheap extension cable and a basic stand. Even the best mic sounds kinda meh if its five feet away on top of the camera... lol. Been super happy with this hybrid setup for a long time now and havent felt the need to upgrade since.
