Hey everyone! I’m gearing up for my first big solo trip to Japan next month, and I’m taking my trusty Sony a6400 along for the ride. I’ve mostly used it for local street photography and family gatherings, but this is the first time I’ll be living out of a backpack for two weeks straight. I absolutely love the compact size of the a6000 series, but I’m starting to realize that the camera body is only half the battle when you're constantly on the move.

I’m trying to keep my kit as light as possible while still being prepared for different scenarios—everything from neon-lit city streets at night to sweeping temple landscapes. I already have the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens, which is a fantastic all-rounder, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the logistical side of things.

Specifically, I’m worried about power. Those NP-FW50 batteries don’t exactly last forever, especially if I’m shooting a bit of 4K video or using the EVF frequently. Should I just stock up on three or four spares, or is there a specific dual-USB charger that works best for charging on the go via a power bank? I’m also debating the best way to carry it. I’ve looked at the Peak Design 3L sling, but I’m worried it might be too tight if I want to bring a second small prime lens. Does anyone have experience with that setup, or do you prefer a Capture Clip on a standard backpack strap for easier access?

I’ve seen plenty of generic 'travel gear' lists online, but they often focus on heavy full-frame setups. I want to hear from fellow a6000 series users who value the portability of this system. I have about $300 left in my budget for accessories to make my life easier.

If you had to narrow it down to the top 3-4 truly essential accessories that balance portability with functionality for a Sony a6400 user, what would they be?

Japan is gonna be incredible with that setup! Honestly, for the a6400, the battery life is the biggest pain point. Id skip the cheap third-party batteries and just buy two more genuine Sony NP-FW50 Rechargeable Battery Pack units. Third-party ones usually lose their capacity way faster, and in the humidity or long shooting days, you want that reliability. Regarding the bag situation, if you find slings too bulky, I swear by the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap. It lets you carry the camera cross-body so its ready to go instantly but doesnt feel heavy like a neck strap. It is way more comfortable for walking miles than a clip on a backpack strap which can get off-balance. Since you mentioned neon lights and temples, definitely grab a Joby GorillaPod 3K Kit. Its small enough to shove in a backpack side pocket but strong enough to hold the a6400 with that Sigma lens for long exposures or self-portraits at night. Lastly, dont overlook storage if youre doing 4K video. I always use the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card because it handles the write speeds without lagging. You really dont want to miss a shot because the buffer is still clearing while youre in the middle of a busy Tokyo street.

Yo! Stumbled on this thread and had to chime in because I did Kyoto and Osaka with my a6400 last year. Honestly, everyone talks about bags and batteries, but for those neon streets at night, you gotta get a mist filter. I used the Tiffen 67mm Black Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter and the way it blooms the lights in Shinjuku is just... chef's kiss. It gives everything that cinematic look without any editing. Like someone mentioned, the battery life is the main struggle, but since you're on a budget, skip the expensive specialized slings for now. I just threw a Tenba BYOB 9 Camera Insert into my regular daypack. It saved me a ton of cash and kept my Sigma 18-50 and a small prime perfectly safe. Also, dont sleep on a tiny tripod for those temple shots or long exposures by the river. The Manfrotto PIXI EVO 2-Section Mini Tripod is super light, fits in a jacket pocket, and handles the a6400 weight easily. One last thing... the a6400 grip is kinda tiny for big hands. I added a SmallRig Cage for Sony A6400 2310 and it made the camera way more comfortable to hold all day. Plus it protects the body if you accidentally bump into someone in a crowded train station. Have an amazing trip, Japan is basically a photographers dream world!

I'd actually suggest a different approach – juggling batteries is a mess lol. In my experience, the Nitecore USN1 Dual Slot USB Travel Charger for Sony NP-FW50 is a lifesaver cuz it monitors cell health. Also, skip the Capture Clip; it'll dig into ur shoulder after a few miles. Go for the Peak Design Everyday Sling 6L V2 instead of the 3L—ur gonna need the extra room for an Anker 533 Power Bank PowerCore 30W 10000mAh! peace
