Hey everyone! I’m currently planning a few photography-focused hiking trips for later this year and realized that my old, bulky studio tripod just isn't going to cut it anymore. I’m shooting with the Sony a6700 as my primary body and often carry the a6400 as a secondary, so I really want to take advantage of that compact APS-C form factor without being weighed down.
I’ve been scouring reviews, but I’m struggling to find that "sweet spot" between portability and actual stability. I mostly use the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, but I occasionally throw on the Sony 70-350mm G lens for wildlife, so the tripod needs to handle that extra reach without wobbling in a light breeze. Weight is my biggest concern—I'm hoping for something carbon fiber that's under 2.5 lbs and can easily fit into a side pocket or inside a standard carry-on bag.
I’ve looked into the Peak Design Travel Tripod and some of the newer Ulanzi models, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the price-to-performance trade-offs. My budget is around $250-$400, though I’m willing to invest more if it’s a “buy it for life” piece of gear. To those of you shooting with similar Sony mirrorless setups, what travel tripods have you found that are easy to pack but don't compromise on build quality for long-exposure landscapes?

In my experience, skip Peak Design—unfortunately had issues with those leg locks. Grab the Sirui AM-225 Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head. It's $150, light, and basically handles my a6700 easily. gl!
I went through this last year. Basically, the struggle with travel tripods is that many are way too spindly to handle a long lens like that Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS Lens without serious vibrations. I actually spent a fortune on a high-end brand and it was a total letdown—the center column wobbled like crazy in even a light breeze... sooo frustrating!!
Anyway, I ended up trying the Leofoto LS-225C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod with EB-36 Ball Head and it's been a game changer for my a6700. It's super compact because it lacks a center column, which honestly makes it way more stable for those long-exposure landscape shots you're planning. I think I paid around $220 for it, so it's well under your budget. It's definitely under that 2.5lb limit and fits in my carry-on no problem. Just sharing my journey, but seriously, dont feel like you *have* to spend $500+ for quality. Budget-focused brands have reallyyy stepped up lately. gl with the hiking trips!! 👍
