so i finally pulled the trigger on the sony zv-e10 ii for my trip to japan this october. i spent way too much on the body and the 10-20mm f4 lens so now i gotta figure out the rig. i really want that smooth cinematic look for walking through busy streets in kyoto but i also need clean audio because i talk a lot while filming. i did some digging and everyone seems to point at the dji rs 3 mini for the gimbal part. it looks solid but i saw one guy on a forum saying he had trouble balancing it with the newer fz100 battery making the grip thicker and the center of gravity feel off compared to the mark i. then there is the crane m3s which is smaller but i dont know if it handles the weight well enough for longer shoots. for the mic i was looking at the sony ecm-b10 since it uses the digital hot shoe and i hate cables getting in the way of the flip screen but then i read that the rode videomic go ii is better for blocking out background noise in crowded places. my budget is roughly 500 dollars for both pieces of gear combined. do you think the rs 3 mini is overkill for this tiny camera or should i look at something more portable that wont hurt my wrist after four hours of walking around...

Japan is amazing!! Honestly the RS 3 is totally overkill for that tiny camera body. I was so worried about my wrist hurting on my last trip!

Quickly jumping in here... I did a trip through Shinjuku with a heavy setup once and by day three my wrist was total toast. Seriously, be careful about the weight. Since you're on a budget and need to walk miles, I'd suggest looking at these:

  • Moza AirCross S 3-Axis Gimbal: This one is surprisingly light and fits the ZV-E10 II perfectly. It's meant for smaller setups, but be careful not to overload it with heavy accessories or the motors might struggle on those long Kyoto hills.
  • Sony ECM-G1 Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone: If you want to keep it simple and cable-free, this is tiny. It's way cheaper than the B10, but it's not quite as directional. Just make sure to stay close to the camera when talking or the background noise might drown you out. I'd definitely test your balance before leaving. Nothing is worse than your rig vibrating mid-shot because of a loose screw.
