What is the sharpest prime lens for Sony FX30 cinematography?

Ive been shooting on the FX30 for a year now mostly for corporate b-roll but I just landed a gig doing macro-style product shots for a local watch brand in October. My usual zooms are looking way too soft for this kind of detail and I really need that clinical ultra-sharp look. The APS-C sensor is picky so I need something that resolves perfectly.

Constraints:

  • Budget under $1200
  • Must have fast AF for gimbals
  • 35mm or 50mm equivalent
  • Minimal chromatic aberration

I was looking at the Sigma 30mm 1.4 but wondering if the Sony 35mm GM is overkill for the crop sensor or if there is something even sharper out there. What is the go-to glass for max resolution on this body?

To add to the point above: that 35mm 1.8 is a solid call. I remember panicking during a watch shoot last year thinking I needed a GM, but that lens saved me. If you're looking at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary, honestly, just go for it. In my experience, its clinical sharpness is insane for the price. I've used it for b-roll and the AF never hunts on my gimbal. Save that extra $800 for better lighting.

The Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 is fantastic! It provides clinical sharpness, exceptional AF performance for gimbals, and incredible value compared to the GM series. Its a total steal for watches!

Finding the right prime for macro is tricky, had issues with it too. This reminds me of when my cousin tried shooting jewelry. He spent weeks obsessing over MTF charts and resolving power. Unfortunately, he got so caught up in technical specs that he forgot to order the gear before the shoot. Total disaster... he tried using a magnifying glass taped to a kit lens. Hilarious but such a letdown after all that data crunching.
