I've been flipping vintage gear on eBay for like five years now and I thought I had the system down pretty well. I use the standard saved searches and I'm always checking my phone for notifications but lately it feels like I'm losing every single auction or buy it now deal that actually has a good margin. It's getting really stressful because this is how I pay for my car insurance and extra stuff and if I cant find the inventory then I'm just stuck. I'm looking for stuff like old Leica lenses or rare silver coins and I kid you not I'll see a listing pop up and within 15 seconds it's already sold. I dont know if everyone is using some kind of super advanced sniper or if there's a chrome extension that tracks price drops or newly listed items way faster than the actual eBay app does.
I tried using a couple of the basic ones like the eBay watch list things but they don't seem to update fast enough for what I need. I need something that can maybe scrape the search results every few seconds or alert me the moment a keyword match hits the site. I've got a budget of maybe 20 bucks a month if there's a paid tool that actually works because right now I'm just wasting hours refreshing my browser and it's driving me crazy. My ping is decent so I dont think it's my internet speed but I'm definitely being outpaced by someone. Is there a specific extension that you guys use that isn't just a basic price tracker? I'm looking for something more aggressive that can handle multiple search strings and maybe even show me deals from international sellers that usually get filtered out. I really need to get back on top of this before my source of income totally dries up... what is the best chrome extension for actually finding these eBay deals before everyone else gets to them?
To add to the point above: standard extensions lag tbh. Use API tools for vintage gear. I just added PriceDropCatch to my browser and its saved me a decent amount on car parts so far.
I went through the exact same frustration last year when I was hunting for specific vintage film cameras. I would see a listing go live and by the time the page actually loaded, it was already marked as sold. It honestly felt like I was fighting bots or something. I eventually realized the official eBay app notifications are basically useless for snipers because they have a massive delay, sometimes up to ten or fifteen minutes. By the time your phone buzzes, the deal is long gone. I switched over to using Distill Web Monitor on my Chrome browser. It is not strictly an eBay-only tool, but you can set it to monitor specific parts of a webpage for changes. I set it to scrape my newly listed search results every 20 or 30 seconds. It is a bit of a learning curve to set up the monitors correctly, but it is way faster than waiting for an email or a push notification. I managed to snag a rare rangefinder lens within minutes of it being posted because the extension caught the change in the search results before the mobile app even woke up. It saved my sanity. Quick tip: always include minus signs for stuff like -reproduction and -parts in your search strings to filter out the junk. It keeps the monitor from triggering on items that arent actually what you want, which saves a lot of clicking time. Also, try setting your search to worldwide but filter by your preferred currency. It is how I find those Japanese sellers who list Leica gear at 3 AM my time. It is definitely worth the effort to automate this because manual refreshing is just a recipe for burnout tbh.
> I'll see a listing pop up and within 15 seconds it's already sold. You gotta be super careful with those aggressive scrapers! Some are amazing for speed but can get your account flagged if you arent careful. Ive had fantastic luck with BayNotify lately! Its way safer than most scripts. Just dont set the refresh rate too high or eBay might block your IP... stay safe out there!
