What is the best app for creating back to school shopping lists?

So my kids are going back to school in about two weeks and I am already losing my mind trying to keep track of everything they need. I have three kids all in different grades here in the Chicago area and the lists the schools sent out are just so long and specific. One teacher wants the 12 pack of Ticonderoga pencils specifically and another wants these certain plastic folders with the three prongs and I keep getting confused about who needs what.

I usually just write everything down on a piece of paper but I always end up losing it or leaving it in the kitchen and then I am standing in the middle of the aisle at the store just guessing. I really need to find an app for my phone that can help me but I am so bad at this stuff and I have no idea where to start. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I just dont understand how people stay so organized with this.

I looked at the app store and searched for lists but so many things popped up and they all looked like they were for business people or something really complicated. My logic was that I just need a place to put:

  • the kids names
  • the specific items for each grade
  • a way to cross it off so I dont buy it twice

I tried using the little notes thing that is already on my phone but I couldnt figure out how to make it look like a checklist where you can actually tap it. I ended up just deleting the words as I bought them but then I couldnt remember what I already spent. I am trying to stay under a $250 budget for all three of them because money is tight this year so I really need to see what I have left to buy. Is there an app that is maybe meant for parents or just people who arent tech geniuses? I heard someone mention something called syncing where my husband could see the list too if he goes to the store but that sounds like it might be too hard for me to set up. I just want something simple and maybe free because I dont want to pay a subscription just to buy glue sticks...

^ This. Also, I tried a bunch of those family apps last year and they were honestly so disappointing. Not as good as I expected and they kept glitching out while I was at the checkout trying to stay on budget.

  • honestly just search youtube for best free list apps for parents
  • look at reddit for simple shopping list sync I saw a video about this recently that explains the setup way better than I can.

I tried using Any.do last year and honestly it was a total letdown. Way too cluttered for just buying glue sticks. Unfortunately, I keep having issues with these pro apps being annoying to use. Someone told me about one called Cozi meant for families, but IIRC the free version has ads tho, which kinda sucks. Still, we can definitely figure out the syncing part together so you dont lose your paper list again!

Ive dealt with those crazy specific Chicago school lists for years now, so I totally get the stress. You definitely dont need those complex business apps like Trello or Monday, theyll just make your head spin and theyre way too much for a school run. Heres what I usually suggest for people who arent super tech savvy but need to stay organized:

  • AnyList: This is probably the easiest one for syncing with your husband. You just share the list and it updates in real-time.
  • Google Keep: Totally free and uses your Gmail account. You can add checkboxes by tapping the plus icon at the bottom.
  • Avoid anything with a pro subscription for just grocery or school lists. Most of those are a total waste of money when free versions do the same thing. One thing to watch out for is buying the off-brand folders if the teacher asked for prongs specifically. I made that mistake once and had to go back because the cheap ones ripped in two days. Also, for tracking that budget and seeing what you still need, Share Product is actually pretty decent for keeping things organized across different stores. I use it for my holiday shopping lists too, it helps keep the chaos down when youre jumping between Target and Amazon and trying to remember who got what. Just make sure you dont get caught up in the aesthetic of the app. Find something where you can hit a button, see a checkbox, and move on. If an app takes more than two minutes to figure out, just delete it and try the next one... life is too short to fight with a shopping list.
