Im planning my housewarming in two weeks and need to share a gift list. Torn between using the invite button on a private list or maybe just making a registry instead. I really dont want random people finding it through search though. Which option is best for keeping it strictly private for only my family?
I had issues with the native Amazon sharing last month. It's not as good as expected since my older relatives kept getting stuck at login screens. Total mess tbh. If you still want to try it:
> Im planning my housewarming in two weeks and need to share a gift list. Torn between using the invite button on a private list or maybe just making a registry instead. In my experience, you definitely want to go with a private list rather than a full-blown public registry if privacy is your main concern. Over the years, Ive noticed that registries—even when you try to hide them—can sometimes still pop up in Google searches or through the Amazon registry search bar if someone knows your name. If you set a standard list to Private, it is completely invisible to the world. To share it with your family, you just click the Invite button at the top right of your list page. Amazon will give you two options: View Only or View and Edit. Choose View Only. This generates a unique, direct link that only works for the people you send it to. It wont show up in any search results, period. It basically stays off the grid unless someone has that specific URL. I've tried many different tools for this, and honestly, the easiest way to manage these lists while youre browsing is the Amazon Wishlist Chrome Extension. It lets you quickly check your settings and add stuff without jumping between tabs. Just double-check that your list is set to Private and not Public before you send that link out. If you need any help finding the specific privacy toggle, just let me know. Its tucked away in the More menu under Manage List. Glad to see you're getting ahead of the housewarming planning... it gets hectic fast.
^ This. Also, quick question... are you looking to give them view-only access or do you want folks to be able to add stuff to the list too? In my experience, the Invite to View link uses a unique tokenized URL that keeps it hidden from search bots and the general public index. Registries are different beasts altogether and can sometimes leak metadata to third-party search tools if you dont lock down every single toggle.
