Amazon wishlist vs sharing cart: which is better for holiday gifting?

So I’m trying to figure out if it’s better to do a shared Amazon cart or just stick with the wishlist feature for our family holiday gifting this year. We’ve got a pretty big group—like 12 adults and a handful of kids scattered from New York down to Florida—and every year someone ends up buying the same thing as someone else and it’s a whole return-process nightmare.

I spent some time googling this morning and read on some tech blog that shared carts are the way to go if you’re trying to coordinate big group gifts, like we’re thinking of chipping in for a new espresso machine for my parents (budget is around $400 for that), but then I saw a thread on Reddit saying that if you use a shared cart it can get super messy with the default shipping addresses and payment methods since it’s all tied to one prime account or whatever. That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen honestly if I have to manage everyone's credit cards or shipping info.

On the other hand, wishlists feel a bit more private but I’m worried about the whole spoiler thing. I read that Amazon is supposed to hide items once they're bought so you don't see what you're getting, but last year my cousin said she could see exactly what was marked as purchased on her own list before she even opened the boxes. Is that a setting you have to toggle or is it just buggy? We need to get this sorted by the end of next week so people can actually start shopping before the Black Friday chaos hits.

I just want the smoothest way to make sure my aunt in Jersey doesnt buy the same Lego set as my brother in Philly. If we do the cart thing, can everyone see the tracking? Or is the wishlist still the gold standard even if it feels a bit clunky sometimes? Just wondering what actually works in practice for a group that isnt super tech savvy...

Regarding what #2 said about "Saw this earlier but just now getting a..." - the wishlist spoiler setting is definitely buggy. For that $400 espresso machine, try this:

  • Use Cart To Link to share the cart contents safely.
  • Everyone uses their own payment methods.
  • Prevents shipping address mix-ups. Honestly, its much more reliable than sharing a login or hoping the wishlist settings actually work.

Sharing an account for group gifts was a disaster for my family because shipping addresses got mixed up instantly. We found sharing the actual cart items is much cleaner for everyone involved.

  • Prevents double-buying the same item
  • Keeps sensitive payment info secure
  • Simplifies coordination for folks who arent tech savvy Cart To Link is how I currently share my cart items without needing to share passwords or account access.

Saw this earlier but just now getting a chance to reply. Honestly, I've had so many issues with the Amazon wishlist spoiler setting that I basically dont trust it anymore. Last Christmas, my sister saw her whole list was marked as bought because she logged in from her phone and the privacy toggle just... didnt work. It was such a letdown. To try and fix that, you gotta go into the list settings and make sure:

  • Don't spoil my surprises is checked
  • The list is set to Shared or Public
  • You dont look at the Purchased filter yourself But unfortunately, it is still super buggy if people buy from a third-party seller instead of directly from Amazon. It is really not as good as expected for a company that big. As for the shared cart idea, that sounds like a total headache. We tried something similar for a big group gift once and it was a complete mess. One person forgot to change the default shipping address and sent a $400 espresso machine to their old apartment three states away. If you are managing 12 adults, someone is definitely gonna mess up the payment method or the address. Amazon is kinda falling behind on the social side of shopping lately. I've started moving my family over to sites like Giftster because they handle the coordination way better without the shipping drama. If you stay on Amazon, just be prepared for at least one person to see their own gifts early. It just happens.
