I've recently upgraded to a Sony Bravia XR, and I’m absolutely loving the picture quality for movies. However, I’m really looking to dive into some casual gaming directly on the TV without having to hook up my bulky PC every time. Since these Sony sets run on Google TV, I know there’s a decent selection of games and cloud services like GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming available right in the app store.

The problem is, I’m totally lost when it comes to picking the right controller. I've heard mixed reviews about Bluetooth latency when connecting directly to the TV's built-in Bluetooth. I currently have an old DualShock 4, but the battery is dying, and it feels a bit laggy. I’m wondering if the newer PS5 DualSense or maybe an Xbox Series X controller would provide a more stable, lag-free experience? I’m also curious if anyone has tried third-party brands like 8BitDo or SteelSeries—do they pair easily with Sony's interface?

I’m really looking for something that feels premium but doesn't require a USB dongle if possible, as I want to keep my setup clean. For those of you gaming on a Sony Smart TV, which controller has given you the smoothest, most responsive performance?

Ok so, before I give advice, can you clarify if ur TV firmware is fully updated? Reliability is huge for me. I've been satisfied with 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth Controller vs SteelSeries+Stratus%2B+Bluetooth+Gaming+Controller&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">SteelSeries Stratus+ Bluetooth Gaming Controller. The 8BitDo works well and is more stable, while the SteelSeries+is+less+consistent&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">SteelSeries is less consistent. Honestly, the 8BitDo is the safer choice for stability. Checking ur settings first is the safest move tho. gl!

sooo i feel u on the lag thing. honestly, i tried gaming on my bravia and even with a high-end set, the built-in bluetooth is kinda disappointing for anything fast. i first tried the Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller since it’s all sony, and while it feels reallyyy premium, the battery life is actually worse than i expected for the price. i also tested the Xbox Wireless Controller Carbon Black and ngl, it’s lowkey more stable. the connection feels snappier on cloud apps like geforce now, tho the clicking is loud. the long-term cost of AA batteries is a bummer, but the value is better since they’re often on sale for like $45. unfortunately, third-party stuff like 8bitdo often needs a dongle for the best experience, which ruins ur clean setup... tl;dr: i recommend the Xbox Wireless Controller Carbon Black for stability or the Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller for feel. both have slight lag cuz tv bluetooth just isn't as good as expected. gl!

Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, I've spent way too many hours trying to fix latency issues on my own Sony setup over the years. I mean, it's sooo frustrating when you're trying to play something and there's that tiny delay... it literally ruins the immersion. Ngl, the built-in Bluetooth on most smart TVs is notorious for this because the BT radio is often shared with the Wi-Fi chip on the internal board. In my experience, if ur TV is on a 2.4GHz network, you're basically asking for interference lag. I eventually learned that even if you spend $70 on a premium controller, the TV hardware itself might still be the bottleneck. To help narrow down whether it's a hardware limitation or just a settings issue, I've gotta ask: are you currently using a wired Ethernet connection for your internet, or are you on Wi-Fi? Also, what's the actual distance between your couch and the TV? TL;DR: Built-in TV Bluetooth is tricky due to hardware interference; knowing your network setup and distance is key to finding a lag-free fix.
