Hey everyone! I am looking to upgrade my workout gear and I am really torn on which Sony headphones to pull the trigger on. I have been a fan of the brand for a long time, but I am struggling to figure out which model actually holds up when things get sweaty and intense.
Right now, I am training for a half-marathon and doing heavy lifting three days a week. My current cheap pair keeps falling out during sprints, and the audio has started crackling because of sweat damage. I have been looking closely at two specific options: the WF-1000XM5 earbuds and the WH-1000XM5 over-ear headphones.
Here is what I am specifically looking for:
I love the idea of the noise canceling on the over-ears for the gym, but I am worried they will get way too hot or slide off when I am doing bench presses. On the other hand, do the tiny XM5 buds actually stay in place when you are moving fast? If you have used either of these for high-intensity training, which Sony headphone would you recommend as the best all-arounder for both the gym and running?
Agreeing with the others, over-ears are basically earmuffs once you start sweating. For a better fit, look at Sony LinkBuds S Truly Wireless Earbuds. They are lighter than the XM5s and usually cheaper, plus they wont budge during runs. If you need maximum awareness, Sony LinkBuds Open Ring Truly Wireless Earbuds are cool, but the lack of seal means you lose that punchy bass for lifting.
Check the stability charts on RTINGS first. For safety, Sony Float Run Off-Ear Wireless Headphones are the best bet because they leave your ears open to traffic while staying totally secure.
Honestly, stay far away from the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Over-Ear Headphones for your runs. I tried using over-ears at the gym and they got way too hot, plus they dont actually have a sweat resistance rating, so you are basically asking for trouble there. The Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Cancelling Truly Wireless Earbuds IPX4 are the way to go for sure. They have an IPX4 rating which handles sweat just fine, and the transparency mode is really natural for staying safe on the road. The fit is pretty secure, though you might need to play with the tip sizes to get them locked in for sprints. If you want something even more low-profile, the Sony LinkBuds S Truly Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds IPX4 are also fantastic and super lightweight. Ngl, the XM5 buds are the best all-arounders for the gym and road runs tho. Good luck with the training!
Seconded!
I have gone through a bunch of different headphones training for various races and honestly, the biggest failure point is always the charging pins corroding from sweat. It is a total nightmare when things just stop charging after a month. Before I suggest something specific, what is your preference on ear tips tho? Do you usually find that the memory foam style on the Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Truly Wireless Earbuds stays in better for you, or do they get gross and slide out once they get saturated? Also, how much of a dealbreaker is battery life for those longer training sessions? Some of these higher-end models have way more battery drain once you factor in the noise canceling and high-bitrate codecs, and I dont want you running out of juice at mile ten.
Yep, this is the way
Big if true
