Hey everyone! I’ve been a loyal Sony fan for years, but I’m really struggling to pick the right pair for my morning runs. I currently use the over-ear XM4s at home, but they’re obviously too bulky and hot for intense outdoor exercise. I need something with a secure fit that won't budge during sprints and, more importantly, has solid sweat resistance. I’m eyeing the LinkBuds S and the WF-1000XM5, but I’m worried about them falling out or the touch controls getting wonky with sweat. How is the ambient sound mode for staying aware of traffic? Does anyone have a favorite Sony model that actually stays put and survives the elements?

Similar situation here - I was honestly worried about the buds falling out during sprints. I ended up grabbing the Sony WF-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds and I've been super satisfied with them. * Foam tips: Technically way better for grip than silicone.
* Price: Usually around $250-$299.
* Awareness: Ambient mode is basically industry-leading. I mean, I've had zero wonky touch issues even with sweat... so yeah, GL! 👍

In my experience, the Sony LinkBuds S is actually the way to go for runs. 1. Weight: At 4.8g, they literally dont budge during sprints cuz of the low center of gravity.
2. Awareness: The ambient mode is basically industry-standard for safety.
3. Durability: IPX4 is fine, but be careful with salt buildup from sweat. Honestly, the Sony WF-1000XM5 has better tech, but the fit is trickier when youre dripping wet, right?

Yo! Honestly, I used to worry about losing pricey buds on sprints too. For your situation, I highkey suggest the Sony WF-C700N Truly Wireless Noise Cancelling Earbuds. Theyre much cheaper, usually around $90-$100, and use physical buttons—so no wonky touch controls with sweat! Theyre insanely light at 4.6g and have that IPX4 rating. Ambient mode is decent for traffic too. Such a solid budget-friendly alternative... gl!

> Does anyone have a favorite Sony model that actually stays put and survives the elements? I have been hanging around this forum for a few years now - though I am still kind of a newbie when it comes to the technical side of things - but I have been doing some market research on what runners are actually buying lately. Tbh, if you are scared of losing expensive buds during a sprint, you might want to look at a different category of Sony gear that is way more budget friendly than the flagship models. You should definitely look into the Sony Float Run Off-Ear Wireless Headphones. They usually retail for way less than the XM5 series and they solve the fit problem because they hook over your ears instead of just sitting in the canal. Here is how the market looks for outdoor exercise gear right now:

  • Sony Float Run: These are great because they have physical buttons - no sweat glitches - and they let you hear traffic perfectly since they are off-ear.
  • Shokz OpenRun: This is the main competitor for Sony in this space and basically the gold standard for outdoor safety using bone conduction.
  • Jabra Elite 4 Active: If you were to look outside of Sony, these are a really popular budget-friendly pick that are built specifically for heavy sweat. For a Sony fan who wants to save some cash, the Float Runs are a solid choice because you wont be worried about them bouncing out onto the pavement!
