Hey everyone! I’m looking to upgrade my studio setup and want to stick with Sony since I’ve always loved their build quality. I’m specifically looking for a pair that excels in critical mixing and mastering. I need something with a super flat frequency response so I can actually trust my EQ decisions. I’ve heard a lot about the classic MDR-7506, but I’m wondering if the newer open-back MDR-MV1 or the MDR-M1ST are better suited for high-res monitoring. Comfort is also a huge factor for me during those long 8-hour sessions. Does anyone here use Sony for their final masters? Which specific model offers the most accurate soundstage and detail?

For your situation:
- Sony MDR-MV1 Open-back Reference Monitor Headphones: Best soundstage and comfort.
- Sony MDR-M1ST Professional Monitor Headphones: Better for critical EQ decisions.
Honestly, the MV1 is literally perfect for those long sessions.

In my experience, you gotta be careful relying ONLY on headphones for final masters. I've tried many over the years and i always suggest a backup.

- Sony MDR-Z7M2 Hi-Res Stereo Overhead Headphones: Really comfortable for long sessions but maybe too much bass for clinical mixing.
- Sony MDR-7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphones: Industry standard for a reason, but watch out for ear fatigue!!

Basically, just double-check ur EQ on monitors too. Good luck!

Regarding what #4 said about "I totally agree with what Conrad said about..." reliability, i think that focus on build quality is why so many of us stay with Sony. I've been super happy with some of their more specialized models that dont always get the mainstream hype.

  • Sony MDR-CD900ST Studio Monitor Headphones: These are essentially the Japanese version of the 7506 but way flatter. No complaints about the mid-range detail on these.
  • Sony MDR-M1 Professional Closed-Back Headphones: These just came out and they're basically the closed-back sibling to the MV1. Great if you need that high-res sound without the bleed. The CD900ST works well for me when i need to hear exactly whats happening in the mix without any coloration. Its built for 24/7 studio use so it wont quit on you. Honestly, for final masters, that consistency is everything.

I totally agree with what Conrad said about the durability. When you look at the stress tests on some of those older components, the MTBF ratings were just insane compared to some of the consumer stuff today. Reliability is everything when you are deep in a mix. It actually reminds me of this old rack mount compressor I used to have in my first studio space. The power supply was so beefy it would actually dim the lights in the room when I flicked the switch. We had it in this tiny basement that used to flood every time it rained, so we had to keep all the gear on these plastic milk crates we stole from behind a grocery store. One time a cat got into the basement and decided the back of the rack was a great place to sleep because it was warm... anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
