im honestly so stressed right now because I just dropped a fortune on the FX3 and my first big wedding gig in Chicago is in two weeks. I have like $400 left for accessories. So I was thinking about the cage situation... I'm torn between the SmallRig basic kit and the Tilta V2 cage. My logic was that Tilta feels more solid but the SmallRig is cheaper so I could maybe afford more batteries? Speaking of which im stuck between buying a single Nano One V-mount or just 4 extra Sony batteries. V-mount seems pro but then I gotta buy the plate and it gets bulky fast and my wrist already hurts just thinking about it. what should I prioritize first?

I spent a full season trying to make v-mounts work for weddings and the extra weight just wasnt worth it. The FX3 is efficient enough that four Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Battery Pack will get you through a 10-hour day easily without the wrist fatigue. My big technical tip is to spend the rest on a PolarPro Peter McKinnon Edition II 2-5 Stop Variable ND Filter. You need a high-quality VND to keep your shutter speed at the 180-degree rule when shooting S-Log3 outdoors. Ive seen cheap filters introduce a nasty green tint or an X-pattern that basically ruins the 10-bit color accuracy. This one has haptic stops so you dont accidentally over-rotate while chasing the bride down the aisle. It’s a much more practical way to spend that last $400 than a heavy battery plate that makes the camera feel like a brick.

Jumping in here because I totally feel that stress! My first wedding was basically a disaster because I lacked high-speed storage for the high bitrates. Total nightmare! Youre gonna need fast media for those 10-bit files.

Unfortunately, I had issues with those heavier setups during long ceremonies. It wasnt as good as expected and basically ruined my wrist. Honestly, just go with SmallRig Camera Cage and you cant go wrong.

  • Buy extra batteries
  • Skip the v-mount plate
  • Keep the rig light You dont want to be struggling with bulk when things get fast. Just get some Sony batteries and youll be set!
