I recently picked up a Sony FX3 and I'm absolutely loving the image quality, but I’m struggling to find the perfect gimbal for my setup. Since I often shoot with the XLR top handle and sometimes a heavier zoom like the 24-70mm GM II, I need something with enough motor strength and clearance. I've been looking at the DJI RS 3 Pro and the newer RS 4, but I'm worried about the overall weight for long shooting days. Does anyone have experience balancing the FX3 with a full cage and accessories on these? Are there any other stabilizers that play particularly well with the FX3's unique form factor? I’d love to hear what you guys are using for your professional projects!
Here's what I recommend: try to snag a used DJI RS 3 Pro Gimbal Stabilizer. since the DJI RS 4 Pro launched, you can find them for like $550. it's basically essential for the XLR handle clearance... i mean, anything smaller is gonna be a nightmare to balance with that heavy 24-70mm GM II. it's worth the extra weight tbh! gl!
For your situation, I'd actually suggest looking at the Feiyu Scorp Pro 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer as a sleeper pick. In my experience, everyone jumps to DJI, but the Scorp Pro has this integrated handle design that really helps with the heavy feeling during long shoots. Honestly, trying to balance a full cage and that Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II on a smaller rig is just asking for motor failure down the road. I'm always a bit cautious about overtaxing gimbals, so I'd rather have the extra overhead. If you're really worried about the weight tho, instead of just a new gimbal, maybe look into a SmallRig Lightweight Chest Support for Gimbal 4096. It’s way cheaper than switching systems again and seriously saves your back. I've tried many setups over the years, and even a light gimbal feels like lead after six hours without some kind of support. Just make sure you double-check the clearance for the XLR handle before you buy... it's a tight fit on almost everything. good luck!!
> Here's what I recommend: try to snag a used DJI RS 3 Pro Gimbal Stabilizer... it's basically essential for the XLR handle clearance... +1 to what was said earlier! The DJI RS 3 Pro Gimbal Stabilizer is goated for value. But compared to the Zhiyun Crane 4 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal, the Crane actually has better arm clearance for that FX3 top handle. The DJI handles the torque of a Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II Lens better, but the Crane feels lighter for long days. Honestly, I’d go DJI for the ecosystem tho. gl!
TL;DR: Skip the expensive "Pro" models. A mid-tier Zhiyun Weebill 3S Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer with a cheap offset bracket handles the FX3 handle just fine for way less money. Honestly, I'm gonna DISAGREE with the idea that you have to go for the top-of-the-line Pro rigs. From a market perspective, brands are really pushing those $600-800 price points, but for most FX3 shooters, it's total overkill. You're basically paying a massive premium just for arm clearance that you can fix with a $25 third-party riser plate. If you want to save money and ur back, look at the Zhiyun Weebill 3S Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer. It has surprisingly strong motors that handle my 24-70mm GM II without breaking a sweat, and it’s much more compact for travel. Tbh, the "Pro" tag is mostly about LiDAR and transmission tech these days... if you don't need those specific features, ur just carrying extra weight for no reason. I’ve also seen some great deals on the MOZA Air 2S Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer lately which is a tank for the price. Just my two cents, but don't let the marketing convince you that bigger is always better!
