So I finally pulled the trigger on a Sony FX3 for this mini-doc I'm filming around Portland next month and man my bank account is hurting but the camera is gorgeous. I've been digging through YouTube and Reddit trying to figure out how to actually rig this thing up because right now it's just the body and that top handle. I saw some people swear by the Tilta cage because of the mounting points but then I read a bunch of comments saying the SmallRig one is better if you actually want to keep using the Sony XLR handle without it feeling wobbly. I'm kinda stuck there.

I'm also debating the power situation. I've got about $800 left in my budget for everything else and I can't decide if I should:

  • Go for a V-mount setup on rails
  • Just buy a handful of extra Sony batteries and call it a day

The V-mount seems heavy for handheld work but everyone says the FX3 eats batteries when you're shooting 4k 120. Also what are you guys using for monitors? I was looking at the Ninja V but then I read that the internal recording is already so good that maybe it's just extra weight I don't need? I just want a setup that doesn't feel like a science project when I'm out in the field trying to move fast. What's actually essential versus just gear-head fluff?

congrats on the fx3, man. its such a powerhouse. i've been using mine for a few months now and i'm really satisfied with how it handles. for the cage, id definitely suggest the SmallRig Camera Cage for Sony FX3/FX30 4183 because it keeps the xlr handle rock solid which is huge for doc work. heres what i think is actually worth the cash:

Are you mostly handheld or on a tripod? I always use a SmallRig VB99 Pro V-Mount Battery 99Wh because it's much safer for keeping voltage stable and prevents ruining cards with hard shutdowns.

Snag a <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+600+Shotgun+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 600 Shotgun Microphone! It fits that handle perfectly.

  • Pro sound
  • Lightweight @Reply #2 - good point! tbh just dont over-rig it if you want to move fast!

Catching up on this and I gotta agree with Arthurbut about not over-rigging. It used to be my thing to have every possible attachment hanging off my camera, but that bit me in the butt during a shoot last winter. While I was chasing a subject, one of my external power cables got snagged on a branch and actually bent the port on my body. It was a total nightmare and basically ended my day right there. Now I am way more cautious about what I add. You might want to consider how much stress you're putting on those ports, especially if youre moving fast in the field. Make sure to double-check every connection point if you do go the external battery route. Honestly, I would suggest keeping it as light as possible for a doc. There is nothing worse than having gear fail in the middle of a once-in-a-lifetime moment because a cable decided to wiggle loose or a plate got finicky. Just keep it simple and focus on the story, man... you'll thank yourself when youre miles deep into a shoot and your arms aren't burning.
