So I finally pulled the trigger on the a7R VI and honestly I am so hyped to take this thing out. I have a trip to the Dolomites coming up in like ten days and I am trying to get my kit sorted before I head out but the problem is these files are freaking massive. I was looking at the specs and since it is 61 megapixels those uncompressed raws are gonna be huge and I am stressed about the write speeds.
I did some digging online and saw a lot of people recommending the Sony Tough G series V90 cards but man they are pricey. Like almost 200 bucks for a 128gb card is wild. My budget is roughly 400 for storage total so I could get two of those but then I saw these ProGrade Digital V60 cards that are way cheaper and have way more capacity for the same price. My logic was that since I am mostly doing landscapes maybe the V60 is fine? But then I started thinking about when I do wildlife and I am blasting away at high speeds... if each file is like 120mb plus then the math just isnt mathing in my head for a V60 card to keep up without the buffer getting totally stuck for like a full minute.
I also read some conflicting stuff on a forum where one guy said the a7R VI actually needs CFexpress Type A to really breathe but then another person said V90 SD cards are basically the same speed for most photo stuff. Im so confused because I dont want to overspend on CFexpress if a good SD card does the trick but I also dont want to be standing there in the cold waiting for the little red light to stop blinking before I can check if my focus was sharp. It is so frustrating trying to figure out if the extra 200 dollars actually buys you performance or if it is just marketing.
Should I just bite the bullet and buy one really fast card and one slow one for backup or is that just asking for trouble? I just need to know what actually works for those high res files without losing my mind or hitting a wall every time I take more than three photos in a row...
I absolutely love the Kingston Canvas React Plus V90 128GB! Theyre incredibly reliable and half the price of Sony cards... making them a safe, fantastic budget choice for those huge files!
Are you shooting uncompressed or lossless raw? In my experience, reliability is everything.
