What are the best gimbal options for the Sony FX3?

I just upgraded to the Sony FX3, and while the internal stabilization is decent, I really need a solid gimbal for more professional tracking shots. I'm a bit torn because I usually keep the XLR top handle attached, and I'm worried about clearance and weight distribution issues. I’ve been eyeing the DJI RS3 Pro and the Zhiyun Crane 4, but I’m curious if the standard RS3 can handle the FX3 with a cage and a 24-70mm GM lens. I really want something that’s quick to balance and doesn't block the flip-out screen. For those of you shooting on the FX3, which gimbal has been the most reliable for your daily workflow?

Nah, the standard DJI RS 3 Gimbal Stabilizer is way too tight tbh. I saved tons of cash by getting a used DJI RS 2 Gimbal Stabilizer and I love it, fits way better!!

Ok so, in my experience, id suggest the DJI RS 3 Pro. I've tried many rigs, and that Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II Lens plus handle is just too risky for small gimbals. - DJI RS 3 Pro: Best for clearance. Extended arms are literally a lifesaver for that XLR handle.
- Zhiyun Crane 4: Strong, but maybe less intuitive for a quick workflow? Honestly, go Pro to avoid motor strain. gl!

So, I’ve been messing around with this exact setup for a while now, and honestly, if your heart is set on keeping that XLR top handle attached, you gotta look into some DIY solutions for the balance issues. I found that standard plates just don't cut it sometimes when you have the 24-70mm GM on there. Here’s what worked for me from a DIY enthusiast angle: • I started using an offset plate like the SmallRig Offset Kit for BMPCC 4K & 6K and Ronin-S/RS 2/RS 3 Pro even on other rigs to shift the camera further left. It gives you that extra bit of clearance so the handle doesnt hit the roll motor during tilt.
• Instead of just buying a huge gimbal, I actually grabbed a SmallRig Counterweight Mounting Plate and added some weights to the side/back. It makes the whole thing heavier, but it balances way faster than fighting the front-heavy GM lens every time you swap batteries.
• If you’re looking for a gimbal that’s not the usual DJI/Zhiyun stuff, the Feiyu Scorp Pro is kinda underrated for the FX3. It’s got a lot of room in the cradle and handles the weight distribution pretty well without needing a pro-level price tag. Basically, if your willing to tinker with some extra weights and plates, you don't necessarily have to get the most expensive rig to get professional results. Just gotta be patient with the initial setup tbh!

Curious about one thing: you using the GM II or the chunky v1?? Honestly, the weight distribution on that older lens totally messed up my motor balance before...

Yep, this is the way

So I totally agree that the standard RS 3 is a recipe for frustration with a 24-70mm GM—I tried it for a week and basically spent more time fighting the balance than actually shooting. After using the FX3 for about 18 months now, I've realized that the *real* secret isn't just the gimbal itself, but how you handle the long-term cable mess and screen clearance. Here is what has actually survived my daily workflow:
* DJI RS 4 Pro - It’s basically a refined version of the 3 Pro, but the motor torque feels a bit more reliable when you're loaded down with the XLR handle and that heavy GM glass.
* Tilta Camera Cage for Sony FX3/FX30 V2 - The top plate is actually designed to work with the XLR handle, which makes a huge difference for stability.
* SmallRig Extended Quick Release Plate - This is the key for the flip-out screen. It lets you shift the camera just enough so you aren't constantly hitting the tilt motor when you're trying to see your framing. It's honestly a bit of a learning curve to get it 'perfect' but going for the Pro series is 100% the right call for an FX3 owner. Just be prepared to *really* check your balance every time you swap focal lengths, or those motors will start to complain after a few months of heavy use (at least that's what happened to me)!
