Just picked up my first Sony a7CII and looking for essential accessories. I'm mainly into travel and street photography, with occasional landscapes. Already have the kit lens, but wondering about filters, extra batteries, grips, and storage solutions. Budget is around $500 for the essentials. Which accessories have you found indispensable for this camera? Any particular brands that work well with the a7CII? Appreciate recommendations from those with hands-on experience!

Like someone mentioned, the a7CII is a beast for travel. Ive been testing different setups for a few months now and I am super satisfied with how it performs when you dial in the technical specs. Here are a few things I found that works well without breaking the bank:

  • ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold Card 128GB
  • People overspend on V90 cards but for the 4:2:2 10-bit video on this camera, a V60 is the sweet spot for data stability. These have a 130MB/s sustained write speed which is plenty.
  • Nitecore USN4 Pro Dual Slot USB QC Charger
  • This is way better than the basic Sony brick. It gives you a real-time readout of the battery voltage, charging current, and even the battery health/temperature. It is super compact for travel too.
  • Hoya 67mm Fusion Antistatic Next Circular Polarizer
  • Since you like landscapes, this is indispensable. It cuts through atmospheric haze and handles reflections way better than a standard UV filter ever could.
  • VSGO Full Frame Sensor Cleaning Kit
  • Honestly, doing your own maintenance is part of the fun. The sensor is exposed on these mirrorless bodies so having a proper 24mm swab kit is a must for when you get dust spots during lens swaps. I really like the 2280mAh capacity of the stock batteries, so just grabbing one extra and a smarter charger like the Nitecore makes the whole power management side much easier to handle.

Honestly those are solid suggestions above. I reallyyy agree with the point about getting a grip for better handling, it makes a huge difference on these smaller bodies. Adding my two cents from a reliability perspective... please dont cheap out on power or maintenance tools. Stick to the official Sony power options for your camera. Tbh, third-party cells might save you some cash but the risk of them failing or having weird voltage issues just isnt worth it when you are miles away from home. For travel and street, you want stuff that is durable and doesnt attract too much attention:

  • Discreet bags from brands like Think Tank or Domke
  • High-quality cleaning supplies from Giottos or Zeiss
  • A rugged weather cover if you plan on being out in the elements Basically, you want gear that you can trust when things get messy. You cant go wrong with the established brands. Just keep it simple and focus on items that prioritize safety and long-term reliability over fancy features... it really makes the whole experience much more enjoyable.

I was comparing Sony stuff to some of the third party brands like SmallRig or even looking at Fuji setups, and Sony just seems to have so many more options for travel. Tbh though, every time I think about gear I just think about my trip to Rome last summer. I brought way too much stuff and my neck was killing me by the third day. I actually ended up leaving most of my gear in the hotel and just walked around with my phone because I found this amazing gelato place near the Pantheon and wanted to eat my weight in pistachio ice cream without holding a heavy camera. I think I took more photos of my food than the actual ruins that day. It was so hot that the gelato was melting faster than I could lick it. Anyway lol, sorry kinda went off topic there.

For travel and street photography with your a7CII, prioritize extra batteries, a quality UV filter for lens protection, and a fast SD card like the SanDisk Extreme Pro series. A small, lightweight tripod could be useful for landscapes. Within your budget, consider a compact grip like the SmallRig for improved handling. Skip expensive filters initially and focus on core essentials.
