I recently purchased a Sony a7C II mirrorless camera and am looking for advice on the best lenses to pair with it for all-around use. I mostly shoot landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits.

From my research, it seems like the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is an excellent and versatile zoom lens that would cover a lot of bases. I've also heard great things about the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 for portraits with beautiful bokeh.

For landscapes, would a wide angle lens like the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II be the way to go? Or would a prime like the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G be sharper?

I'm open to both zoom and prime lens suggestions. My budget is flexible but I'd like to get the best bang for the buck. Factors I value are image quality, fast aperture, and autofocus performance.

Those of you shooting with the a7C II, what lenses have you been most impressed with? What are your go-to lenses for the types of photography I mentioned?

Thanks in advance for your advice and lens recommendations! Looking forward to seeing some sample images as well.

Since Sony a7C II is compact mirrorless camera, so you'd better to get compact lenses, I highly recommended the FE 16-25mm f/2.8 G, FE 20-70mm f/4 G and Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8.

Here are some recommended lenses for Sony a7CII:

The new lightweight FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is another great choice for a7CII, if you want to shooting high quality portraits.

Versatile Zoom Lenses:
The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 offers outstanding value with excellent image quality, fast aperture, and weather sealing in a relatively compact package. Sony's own 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II delivers exceptional optical performance but at a premium price and larger size.

Compact Prime Lenses:
Since the a7C II prioritizes portability, consider Sony's compact primes: the 35mm f/1.8, 40mm f/2.5 G, and 50mm f/2.5 G are all excellent companions that maintain the system's small footprint while delivering great image quality.

Travel Zoom:
The Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 provides incredible versatility in a single lens that balances well on the a7C II, perfect for one-lens travel setups.

Ultra-Wide:
The Sony 16-35mm f/4 offers excellent wide-angle performance in a reasonably sized package, while Tamron's 17-28mm f/2.8 provides a faster aperture at similar size and lower cost.

Portrait:
The Sony 85mm f/1.8 delivers beautiful portraits without the bulk or cost of the GM version, perfectly complementing the a7C II's compact design.

The Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens is a great compact standard zoom lens for a7CII. Only half price of FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II.

Regarding what #23 said about "Versatile Zoom Lenses:The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2 offers" a solid balance, I totally agree that sticking to something reliable is the way to go. I've been through a few different kits over the years and I've finally reached a point where I'm satisfied with a more conservative, simplified setup. My current setup works well and honestly, I don't miss the extra weight of my old lenses at all. I learned that for me, reliability and just knowing the gear wont fail is worth more than having every possible focal length. I'm much happier now that I'm not constantly swapping glass in the field. It's been a solid experience tho, and I havent had a single issue with the autofocus missing shots. Keeping it simple was definitely the right move for my back and my peace of mind...

Small but mighty: Sony's G prime lenses (24mm f2.8G, 40mm f2.5G) paired with the A7CII create an incredibly portable setup. These pocket-friendly lenses deliver excellent image quality and feature useful manual aperture rings. Perfect for photographers who want pro-level gear in a compact package.
