I just got the Sony a7C II because everyone said it was small and good for travel but honestly I have no idea what I'm doing yet. I'm going to Japan in three weeks and I want to take some of those cool long exposure shots of the water and stuff. I tried looking at tripods on Amazon and there are like a million of them and some cost as much as the camera?? I only have about $150 left in my budget after buying the lens. I need something that fits in a regular backpack and wont fall over if it gets a bit windy.

  • must be light
  • easy to set up because I'm slow
  • works with a7c ii

Is there a specific one people like for this camera or am I just overthinking it?

Regarding what #2 said about "> I tried looking at tripods on Amazon..." - be careful with those random no-name brands. Most are just junk. For your budget, I would suggest comparing these two:

Look, I have gone through way too many tripods over the years, and honestly, the 150 dollar range is where you finally start getting gear that wont just fall over in a light breeze. For an a7C II, you really want something that matches that compact vibe without sacrificing the stability needed for long exposures. In my experience, carbon fiber is worth every penny because it actually damps vibrations better than aluminum. This is huge when you are shooting water at a 2-second or 5-second shutter speed. I would definitely grab the Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head. It fits perfectly in a standard backpack because it folds down to about 12 inches by reversing the legs. Heres why this one works for your specific setup:

  • Weight: Its only about 1.8 lbs, so your shoulders wont hate you after walking around Tokyo or Kyoto all day.
  • Build: The carbon fiber legs are surprisingly stiff for how thin they look.
  • Setup: The twist locks are fast. Just a quarter turn and they slide right out. Tbh, since it is so light, you should always hang your camera bag on the center column hook if it gets windy. It lowers the center of gravity and makes the whole thing way sturdier. Japan gets pretty gusty near the coast or in the mountains, so dont skip that trick if you want sharp shots. Youll be fine, just dont overthink the fancy 600 dollar stuff yet.

> I tried looking at tripods on Amazon and there are like a million of them Unfortunately, most budget options are quite disappointing for long exposures. I've had issues with cheap ball heads slipping, which ruins your shots. The Vanguard VEO 3GO 235AB Aluminum Travel Tripod is a professional alternative that stays within your budget. It's slightly heavier than I'd like, but it handles the wind way better than generic Amazon gear.
