What cages are you guys actually liking for the Sony FX3 these days? Ive been shooting documentary stuff for over ten years now and I just swapped my bulky FS7 for this little beast but honestly the rigging is more confusing than I expected.

I really need to keep that Sony XLR top handle for my audio setup but every cage I look at seems to either block the buttons or make the whole thing feel flimsy. I have a corporate shoot in Seattle next Tuesday so I need to order something tonight. Budget is around $200. Is the SmallRig one decent for the handle extension or should I just go Tilta even though their shipping is sometimes slow...

I'm jumping in late but i've been using a less common setup that works well if you want to save some cash. I picked up the Nitze Sony FX3 Camera Cage with XLR Handle Extension T-S03A and honestly, I am very satisfied with how it handles. It is way cheaper than the boutique brands but feels solid enough for corporate work. The extension for the XLR handle is included and it doesnt feel flimsy at all, which was my big worry coming from a sturdier setup. Since you gotta get this by Tuesday, Nitze usually ships fast through the big retailers. Use the leftover money from your $200 budget to grab something like the Nitze SSD Mount Bracket for Samsung T5 or just more media. It keeps the profile low and doesnt block the tally lights or any of the top buttons which is a lifesaver when you're moving fast tho.

I went through this exact same headache last year when I downsized. Coming from a bigger rig, the FX3 feels like a toy until you actually start bolting things onto it. Honestly, if you are on a deadline for Tuesday, SmallRig Sony FX3 / FX30 Camera Cage with XLR Handle Extension 4184 is a decent option because you can usually find it in stock for quick shipping. I picked one up for a run-and-gun doc project and the handle extension is actually pretty clever. It wraps around the Sony XLR unit so you dont lose the audio but you gain extra mounting points. The Tilta gear looks slicker, ngl, but I have had issues with their lead times. The SmallRig one is just basic and functional. It doesnt block the record button or top dials which was my main worry. Just make sure you tighten those tiny side screws properly or it might wiggle a bit tho.

Like someone mentioned, SmallRig is the fast choice, but I've had issues with their 4184 extension feeling a bit mushy. It is disappointing when you're used to the FS7 tank.
