Im honestly so fed up with trying to use the tiny built-in screen on my Sony FX3 especially when Im outdoors in the sun. Its basically impossible to see if my focus is even hitting right and I just did a shoot last weekend where half the footage was slightly soft because I couldnt tell what was going on. My logic was that I could save some money by just using the flip-out screen since the FX3 is already so expensive but man was I wrong.
I bought this cheap $150 monitor off Amazon a month ago and its a total piece of junk, the colors are way off and the lag is driving me insane. Im doing a big outdoor wedding shoot in Miami in about two weeks so I really need to get this sorted like yesterday. I was thinking about just biting the bullet and getting an Atomos Ninja but I dont really need the external recording since the FX3 internal codecs are already great so it feels like Im paying for features I wont use.
Then I looked at the Portkeys because of the camera control stuff but Ive heard the menus are a nightmare to navigate. My budget is around $600 maybe a bit more if its actually worth it. Does anyone have a setup they actually love that doesnt feel like a chore to use? I just want something bright enough to see in daylight that wont die on me after an hour...
To add to the point above: I honestly think the Osee T7 7 Inch 3000nit Daylight Viewable Monitor is worth a look. I've been shooting for a long time and spent way too much money on cheap gear before realizing that for Miami sun, 3000 nits is basically the only way to survive. I used this on a coastal shoot last year and it was the first time I didnt have to hunch over my camera with a towel over my head. The build is a bit more plasticky than the high-end stuff, but its light which helps when youre on your feet for an 8-hour wedding. Just make sure you get some high-capacity batteries like the Sony NP-F970 L-Series Battery because high-bright screens are basically space heaters that eat power. Its a solid middle ground that fits your budget and focuses on visibility rather than recording features you dont need. It definitely beats trying to use that tiny built-in screen for critical focus.
In my experience, you cant beat the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit High Brightness Monitor. It saved me during a blindingly bright outdoor wedding in July once.
Look at the SmallHD Action 5 5.5 inch 2000 nit Daylight Viewable Monitor. Its basically a stripped-down version of their pro line but with 2000 nits, which is non-negotiable for Miami sun.
