I'm finally upgrading my kit for the FX3 and need a solid 24-70mm for documentary work. I’m stuck between the Sony GM II and the Sigma Art. Autofocus reliability and weight for gimbal use are huge for me. Between these two, which one performs best for professional video projects?
yo, i've used the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II for a doc shoot and was sooo satisfied. basically: 1. Weight: It's 191g lighter than the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for Sony E-mount—huge for gimbal payloads.
2. AF: Four XD Linear motors track 4K/120p perfectly, right?
3. Control: Linear response MF works well for focus pulls. Lesson learned? Weight saves your back tho!
> weight for gimbal use are huge I've seen gimbal motors burn out. TL;DR: the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II is lighter and safer than the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. Go native for reliability, trust me.
For your situation, i totally feel u on the gimbal struggle! the weight diff is actually huge for doc work. i've used both on my fx3 and learned: - the third-party one is solid but way heavier
- the newer native one has faster linear motors
- it's *way* easier to balance honestly, i'd go with the native one... the AF is LITERALLY insane for video tho! gl
