What lens is best suited for capturing stunning portraits with a beautiful, creamy bokeh effect on my Sony a7 III? I'm looking for something that excels at subject separation and renders pleasing background blur. Are there any particular prime lenses that stand out for portraiture on the a7 system? What are your experiences with achieving that sought-after bokeh, and what aperture settings do you recommend?

Honestly, if you want the absolute best bokeh on an a7 III, you have to look at how the glass handles spherical aberration and transitions. Its not just about having a wide aperture like f1.4, basically you want to avoid those nasty onion rings caused by poor aspherical lens polishing. Tbh, I always lean towards the G Master line because they use XA elements specifically to address this. Here are the most reliable choices for high-end rendering:

  • Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM
  • The 11-blade circular aperture keeps the blur smooth even when you stop down a bit.
  • Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM
  • Offers incredible subject separation due to the compression, though it can be heavy.
  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM
  • Exceptional contrast and the newest nano AR coatings to prevent flare. Definately watch your aperture settings though. While shooting wide open gives you the shallowest depth, you often get mechanical vignetting where the bokeh turns into cat-eyes at the corners. I usually stop down to f1.8 or f2.0 to keep the circles more uniform across the sensor. Yeah, it feels like youre wasting the glass but the reliability of the output is much better lol.
