I'm aiming for beautiful bokeh and sharp focus. I'm open to considering both Sony and third-party options. What focal length and aperture combination do you find most effective for portraits, and are there any specific lenses that you would highly recommend for maximizing the capabilities of the a7R IV sensor? What are your favorite portrait lenses?
Saw this earlier and man, reading about all these lenses just makes my wallet cry! I love photography so much but the cost of entry for decent glass on the a7R IV is just mind-blowing. Honestly its ridiculous!
Honestly, I think everyone defaults to 85mm way too fast, but that high-res sensor on the a7R IV can really benefit from some different glass to get a unique look... basically, I feel like 135mm or even a fast 50mm gives a much more interesting perspective for portraits. Here’s a quick comparison of what I’ve been researching lately: 1. Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art
- Pros: The sharpness is honestly incredible for those 61MP files. The background melt is just soooo good, really gives that "3D" look.
- Cons: It’s a total beast to carry around. I think it weighs over 1kg? My wrists hurt just thinking about it lol. 2. Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art
- Pros: Much better value than the first-party stuff. It’s great for environmental portraits where you want some of the background in the story rather than just a blur.
- Cons: AF might be a tiny bit slower than the top-tier GM lenses? Not really sure if it matters for most portrait sessions though. So basically... maybe look beyond the 85mm bubble? There are some reallyyy cool options out there right now if you want to maximize that sensor.
For stunning bokeh and sharpness on the a7R IV, an 85mm or 135mm prime lens with a wide aperture like f/1.4 or f/1.8 is ideal. The Sony 85mm f/1.4 GM and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art are excellent choices. For a tighter budget, consider the Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE.
