How do Sigma Art lenses compare to native Sony lenses when used on the a7 series in terms of image quality, autofocus performance, and build quality? Are there any significant advantages or disadvantages to using Sigma Art lenses, especially considering the often lower price point? Which specific Sigma lenses have you found to be particularly impressive or disappointing on the a7 series? What has your experience been?
Honestly, I've had some issues with the Art series lately that made me a bit sad. Technically they are incredibly sharp, but the autofocus is unfortunately not as good as expected when things start moving fast. I recently tried the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and it just didnt feel as snappy as the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM for tracking kids or pets. It’s frustrating because you want that lower price to work out, but the native Sony linear motors really have a technical edge for hit rate. Another thing is the focus breathing. I did some video work with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and it was pretty distracting. I really wanted it to be a perfect alternative, but it just wasnt quite there for my needs. If you're doing strictly stills tho, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is a beast and much more manageable than their older heavy stuff. Just keep in mind that for fast-paced work, you might find the Sigma's slightly laggy response a bit of a letdown. Let me know if you need more specifics on the AF speeds!
Sigma Art lenses offer compelling value on Sony a7 cameras. Image quality often rivals native lenses. Autofocus can be slightly slower, but recent Sigma offerings have improved considerably. Build quality is generally excellent. Consider Sony for seamless integration, but Sigma provides strong alternatives, especially for budget-conscious users. I've been happy with the 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art.
