So I finally pulled the trigger on the a7R V but honestly picking a lens is making me want to scream. I spent hours looking at the Sony 12-24mm GM but everyone says the front element makes filters a massive headache and I need those for my trip to Zion next month. Then I looked at the 16-35mm GM II but some people claim it still isnt sharp enough for that 61mp sensor at the edges. I just want something that wont kill my back on a 10 mile hike but gives me that crazy detail.

  • Budget is $2500 max
  • Must be sharp enough for huge prints
  • Weight matters since Im hiking
  • Needs to handle filters easily

What is actually the best move here?...

The concerns you heard about the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II edges are likely holdovers from the first generation. The Mark II was redesigned specifically to handle these high-res sensors, and it performs beautifully on the a7R V. It uses standard 82mm filters, so you wont have to lug around a massive specialized filter holder in Zion. Plus, it is surprisingly light at about 547g. If weight is the absolute priority, the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is the smart move. It is a prime, so you lose the zoom range, but the sharpness is incredible for a 61mp sensor. It uses 67mm filters and is tiny compared to any GM zoom. If you can live with a fixed focal length, it saves you a ton of bulk on those 10-mile hikes. Both lenses are well within your $2500 budget.

Totally agree with Reply #1! I love the Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 PZ G tho, its much lighter and saves cash... honestly amazing for long Zion hikes!

The best move really depends on your style since hiking Zion is no joke. Ive been very satisfied with my high-res prints lately by prioritizing weight. I remember doing the Narrows with too much gear and it basically ruined the day. A few things to clarify:

  • Do you usually shoot wider than 16mm?
  • Are you okay with using a filter holder system instead of screw-ons? That extra weight adds up fast tho.
