I'm a family photographer who recently switched to Sony and I'm looking to build out my lens collection. I mostly shoot portraits, candids, and the occasional landscape when we're on family trips. I'd love to get some recommendations from more experienced Sony shooters on the best lenses for my needs.

I'm thinking I'll need a good versatile zoom lens to cover the basics, maybe a fast prime for portraits, and possibly a wide angle for landscapes. But I'm open to suggestions! What focal lengths do you think are essential for family photography? Any specific Sony lens models that have worked well for you?

I'd like to keep my total lens budget under $2000 if possible. Excited to hear your thoughts and experiences with Sony glass!

Here are some Sony lenses I recommended for family photography :

  1. Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II Lens: This is an exceptional zoom lens that offers outstanding sharpness, fast autofocus, and beautiful bokeh. It's perfect for capturing candid moments and portraits from a distance, making it ideal for family events and outings. The f/2.8 aperture allows for great low-light performance and subject separation.

  2. Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens: If you prefer prime lenses, the 135mm f/1.8 GM is a fantastic choice for family portraits. The focal length allows you to maintain a comfortable distance while capturing stunning portraits with creamy bokeh. The f/1.8 aperture is perfect for low-light situations and creating a shallow depth of field.

  3. Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens: The 85mm f/1.4 GM is another excellent prime lens for family photography. It offers exceptional sharpness, beautiful bokeh, and fast autofocus. The focal length is ideal for portraits and the f/1.4 aperture allows for great low-light performance and subject separation.

  4. Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM Lens: For a wider perspective and more environmental portraits, the 35mm f/1.4 GM is a great choice. It offers a versatile focal length for capturing family moments in various settings, whether indoors or outdoors. The f/1.4 aperture allows for excellent low-light performance and a shallow depth of field when needed.

  5. Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD Lens: If you want a single lens that covers a wide range of focal lengths, the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 is an excellent option. It offers a versatile zoom range, fast aperture, and great image quality. It's perfect for capturing a variety of family moments, from wide-angle environmental shots to tighter portraits.
