Which external hard drive works best for PS4 Pro storage upgrades?

Man I am literally at my breaking point with this storage situation. My PS4 Pro has been screaming at me for weeks that it's full and I just had to delete God of War just to download a stupid 15GB patch for Call of Duty. It feels like I spend more time managing my library than actually playing anything these days. I live in a pretty small place in Chicago so I dont have room for a bunch of extra gear, I just need one solid drive that sits there and works. I've got like $90 saved up and I really need to get this sorted by Friday because I have a bunch of buddies coming over for a long weekend of gaming and I dont want to be that guy making everyone wait 3 hours for a download.

I spent all last night looking at options but honestly it just made me more stressed. I saw the Seagate Game Drive that has the official PlayStation logo on it but then I read on some subreddits that it's literally just a basic Barracuda drive inside a fancy plastic case and you're paying a Sony tax for the sticker. Then I looked at the WD Black P10 and people say it's way more durable but it might be overkill? I also keep seeing people mention that putting an SSD in an external enclosure is faster but does that even matter for a PS4 Pro? Like, will it actually make the load times in Bloodborne or Monster Hunter fast enough to justify the extra cost? Some people say the USB 3.0 port bottlenecks the speed anyway so an SSD is a waste of money but others swear by it. I just dont want to drop my hard-earned cash on something that ends up being slow or, worse, something that fails in three months and I lose all my save data.

Should I just go with a standard 2TB HDD or is there a specific model that actually plays nice with the Pro's hardware? I'm so paranoid about buying the wrong thing and having it stutter during a boss fight...

Honestly, its kind of a bummer how much marketing fluff is out there for official PlayStation drives. Youre right about that Seagate Game Drive 2TB External HDD... it is basically just a standard Barracuda drive with a higher price tag because of the branding. I had one of those fail on me after barely six months of heavy use, which was super frustrating given the premium I paid. Technically, the PS4 Pro does benefit from an SSD, even over USB 3.0. While the interface maxes out around 5Gbps, a standard mechanical drive usually wont even hit 150MB/s. Youll definitely see faster load times in Bloodborne with something like the Samsung T7 Shield 1TB Portable SSD because it handles random read operations way better than any spinning disk. Mechanical drives have high latency because the physical head has to move to the data. Unfortunately, for $90, you might struggle to find a 2TB SSD, which leaves you in a tough spot if you need massive capacity for your buddies gaming weekend. If you want reliability without the markup, stay away from thin portable HDDs. They mostly use SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) which is honestly garbage for gaming because write speeds tank once the drive fills up. If you go the HDD route, I usually suggest the WD Black P10 2TB Game Drive tho even that is just a 5400RPM drive. Its better than the Seagate but wont change your life. Just dont expect miracles... mechanical drives are the primary bottleneck for the Pros performance.

I totally get the frustration with those massive CoD patches, they're honestly the worst. Since you're looking to stay under $90 and need it fast, I've been super happy with just sticking to a high-quality HDD for my bulk library. While SSDs do technically help with those long Bloodborne load screens, the PS4 Pro CPU is kinda the real bottleneck, so the difference isnt as mind-blowing as it is on the PS5. I've had no complaints with these options for my own setup:

  • Western Digital WD Black P10 2TB Game Drive is a solid choice. It's got a metal top that helps with heat dissipation and it feels way more durable than the cheap plastic ones.
  • If you want to save some extra cash for pizza during your gaming weekend, the Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB Portable External Hard Drive is basic but works incredibly well for the price.
  • If you really want that SSD snappiness, the Crucial X8 1TB Portable SSD usually hovers right around your $90 limit. The technical reality is that the Pro's USB 3.0 ports max out at 5Gbps, so even if you buy a super fast drive, the console won't use all that speed. I'm perfectly satisfied with a 2TB HDD because having more games installed is better than having 5 games that load 10 seconds faster imo. Just plug it in, let the PS4 format it, and you'll be ready for your buddies by Friday... easy stuff.
