Hey everyone! I’m finally hitting that point where I have to delete a game every time I want to install something new on my PS4 Pro. Between massive titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Modern Warfare, my internal 1TB drive is completely maxed out. I’ve been looking at some options, but I’m torn between getting a high-capacity 4TB HDD for the extra space or spending more on an external SSD for potentially faster load times. Does the Pro actually benefit much from an external SSD, or should I just stick to a reliable brand like Western Digital or Seagate? For those of you currently using one, which specific model has been the most reliable for you?

Curious about one thing: what's your actual budget for this upgrade? Ngl, I've been tinkering with PS4 Pro setups for years, and the "speed vs. space" debate is basically a classic. Since you're on a Pro, you actually HAVE the bandwidth to take advantage of an external SSD via the USB 3.1 ports, which is honestly AMAZING!! If you want MASSIVE storage for cheap, the Seagate Game Drive for PS4 4TB is a solid bet. It's super reliable and designed for the console, but you're still stuck with those long RDR2 loading screens. On the flip side, something like the Crucial X8 2TB Portable SSD is way faster... like, literally cuts load times in half for big open-world games. Basically, do you want to keep 100 games ready to go, or do you just want your favorites to load instantly? Let me know and I'll give you my final pick! Cheers.

Hey, i feel u on that... Modern Warfare is basically a storage hog lol. So, honestly, the PS4 Pro does benefit from an SSD more than the base model cuz of the SATA III interface, but it's still kinda limited by the old Jaguar CPU. If you want pure speed for games like RDR2, I recommend the Samsung T7 Shield 2TB Portable SSD. It'll definitely shave some seconds off those loading screens. But if you just want to stop deleting stuff every week, I'd suggest going with the Western Digital 4TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive. It's super reliable and the price-per-gig is way better. Personally, I use the 4TB WD for my backlog and keep the active games on the internal drive. It's a pretty solid setup and honestly way cheaper than a massive SSD. Good luck!!

Totally agree with the above! I spent ages looking at SATA III specs cuz I was sooo stressed... I eventually found the Toshiba Canvio Basics 4TB Portable External Hard Drive for like $95. Honestly, 4TB at that price is literally amazing compared to a tiny SSD!! I learned that having tons of games ready is way better than saving 5 seconds on loading lol. Gl!!

It's interesting to see everyone split between the 'speed' and 'bulk storage' camps, but there's a middle ground in the market most people overlook lol. Honestly, if you look at the current market trends, those 'official' console drives are mostly just marketing fluff where you pay extra for the logo. If you want the best bang for your buck without going bottom-barrel, check out the Crucial X8 Portable SSD. It's usually priced way more aggressively than the Samsung equivalents while offering basically the same real-world performance on a Pro. On the HDD side, everyone mentioned the portables, but if you don't plan on moving your console, a desktop-class drive is worth considering. Something like the SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE is built like a tank compared to the plastic shells of the standard portable series. These pro-grade drives are often rated for much higher workloads and better heat dissipation. Tbh, the PS4 Pro is at that age where any decent SSD will feel like magic compared to the stock mechanical drive, but for pure longevity, I’d look at the professional lines rather than just the 'gaming' ones. What's your top priority though, speed or raw TBs?
