I’m finally pulling the trigger on the PS5 Pro pre-order, but I realized the setup is a bit different from the base model. Since it doesn’t include the disc drive or the vertical stand, those are already on my list, but I’m wondering what else I should prioritize to really leverage that extra power. I'm specifically curious about whether I should upgrade to a faster NVMe SSD or if there are certain peripherals, like the DualSense Edge, that feel like a better 'fit' for this tier of console. I want to make sure my setup is fully optimized from day one without overspending on fluff. Aside from the obvious add-ons, what specific accessories are you considering essential for the Pro?

Curious about one thing: what's ur current display setup looking like? Tbh, if ur not rocking a screen with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz support, a lot of that Pro power and PSSR tech might basically go to waste. Before I give full advice, I wanna make sure ur screen can actually output what the Pro is pushing!! Anyway, from a practical perspective, I'd be careful about overspending on the "high-end" stuff just because the console has that "Pro" tag. Here’s what I’d actually prioritize for a budget-conscious but optimized setup: - WD_BLACK 2TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD with Heatsink - Honestly, don't feel like you HAVE to get the Samsung 990 that everyone suggests. This WD drive is consistently cheaper and it's literally just as fast for loading games. Ur getting the same performance for less cash. Plus, since the Pro already has 2TB, maybe hold off until a big sale??
- Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense Charging Station - It’s lowkey the most useful thing I own. It keeps the setup clean and ensures you don't have cables dangling everywhere, which feels more "premium" anyway. - SteelSeries+Arctis+Nova+7P+Wireless&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7P Wireless - If you want better audio but think the Pulse Elite is a bit much, these are a great middle ground. Super comfy for long sessions and the battery life is insane. Basically, I'd say focus on the display first. If that’s solid, then look at the storage. But yeah, let me know about that TV/monitor! gl!

> I'm specifically curious about whether I should upgrade to a faster NVMe SSD or if there are certain peripherals, like the DualSense Edge, that feel like a better 'fit' for this tier of console. Had a moment to think about this more since I've been obsessing over my own Pro preorder details. Honestly, since you're already dropping the cash for the Pro, you definately wanna match that performance with the right gear or it feels like ur driving a Ferrari on budget tires. **Option A: The Storage Boost**
The Pro has 2TB, which is *literally* a life-saver, but those Pro-enhanced patches are gonna be huge. I compared the Samsung 990 Pro 4TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink vs the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink. - *Pros:* Samsung is the speed king (7,450 MB/s); WD is more stable on price. - *Cons:* 4TB is still pricey ($300+).
- *Verdict:* Only upgrade if you're a digital hoarder. The stock 2TB is decent for a start. **Option B: The Pro Controller**
The DualSense Edge Wireless Controller is basically mandatory for this tier imo.
- *Pros:* Back paddles and trigger stops are game-changers for FPS games. - *Cons:* Battery life is kinda mid; costs around $200. - *Verdict:* This is the best "fit." It makes the whole experience feel premium. **Option C: The Audio**
Don't overlook the Sony PlayStation Pulse Elite Wireless Headset.
- *Pros:* Planar magnetic drivers give insane clarity for 3D audio.
- *Cons:* The design is a bit wierd.
- *Verdict:* Best way to leverage that Tempest engine. Honestly, go with the Edge controller first. The 2TB internal is actually okay for now, but the tactile upgrade of the Edge is something you'll feel every second you're playing. gl! 👍

I was looking at the Pro too and honestly, my main concern is making sure the thing doesnt get fried or bricked because of some cheap accessory. I learned the hard way with my base PS5 that buying those random off-brand vertical stands with built-in fans can actually be pretty sketchy for the airflow and the power supply, so I am sticking to the basics this time. I have been trying to save some cash where it counts to offset that price tag. Instead of the flashy stuff, I went with a really solid Belkin 12-Outlet Pivot-Plug Surge Protector and a decent Amazon Basics RJ45 Cat6 Ethernet Patch Cable. It is not as exciting as a new controller, but I feel way better knowing the console is protected from power spikes, especially since the Pro is such a big investment, you know? Basically, I realized I dont need the most expensive peripherals to have a good time. I am just focusing on reliability and making sure the connection is stable for those big downloads, lol. I would rather spend that extra money on actual games than on a fancy stand that does the same thing as a flat surface.

Honestly, looking at the market right now, I would be realy careful about your signal chain. If you want to actually leverage that extra power without weird flickering or bandwidth issues, you should probably look into a high-quality certified cable. Generic ones are basically a gamble once you start pushing 120Hz and PSSR tech.

Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!

^ This. Also, Robertrag is spot on about the signal chain. I have been really satisfied with how my setup performs when focusing on the technical data points. While the Crucial T500 is a solid pick, I prefer the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink for its superior IOPS and thermal stability. In my tests, the integrated heatsink design works well to keep temperatures within spec even during high-bandwidth PSSR processing. Here are a few technical alternatives that work well:

  • Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB SSD with Heatsink
  • This one has an incredible 2550 TBW rating, which basically means it will likely outlive the console itself.
  • Audeze Maxwell Wireless Gaming Headset
  • The 90mm planar magnetic drivers offer a much flatter frequency response than the Pulse Elite, giving you way more accurate spatial audio. Honestly, sticking with brands that provide detailed MTBF data is the best way to ensure the Pro stays optimized. No complaints with this route so far.

Jumping in here because this talk about the Pro setup reminds me of when I went totally overboard with my DIY gaming station back in the day! I was so obsessed with getting the perfect cable management that it turned into a whole ordeal...

  • I actually tried to drill through my desk to hide the wires and ended up hitting a metal support beam i didnt know was there.
  • The drill kicked back so hard I almost knocked my TV off the stand!
  • Ended up with a huge jagged hole in my expensive desk and I had to cover it with a giant mousepad for like three years. Honestly, it was such a legendary disaster but I loved every second of the chaos! Its just so fun when a new piece of tech like the Pro comes out and you start dreaming up these massive projects to make the setup feel special. Truly amazing times tho!
