Which external microphone works best with Sony ZV-1 cameras?

Hey everyone! I’ve been using my Sony ZV-1 for a few months now, mostly for travel vlogging and some sit-down setup videos. While I love the camera’s portability and the fact that it comes with that little 'deadcat' windscreen, I’m starting to feel like the built-in audio just isn't cutting it anymore. It picks up a bit too much background hiss, and when I’m outside, the wind still manages to clip the audio.

I’m looking for an external mic that fits the ZV-1's compact vibe. I don’t want anything so massive that it makes the rig top-heavy or blocks the flip-out screen, which is a big concern for me. I’ve been looking at the Sony ECM-G1 since it’s cable-free via the multi-interface shoe, but I’ve also heard people rave about the Rode VideoMicro and the Deity V-Mic D4. My budget is around $150, and I really prefer something that’s plug-and-play so I don't have to worry about charging separate batteries.

Does anyone have experience with these specific mics on the ZV-1? I'm curious if the cable-free Sony options are actually worth the price over a traditional 3.5mm shotgun mic. What would you recommend for getting clear, crisp vocals while keeping the setup lightweight?

Basically, external mics bypass noisy preamps for cleaner signal. This matters because the ZV-1's internal audio is super prone to wind. - Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone: Cable-free but unfortunately sounds a bit thin.
- Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone: Better tone, but the cable blocks the screen... annoying!
I'd suggest the Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone. It's overpriced tbh, but keeping the setup cable-free is the only way to go for vlogging. gl!

Re: "Bump - same question here" - honestly, the thread hits the nail on the head regarding the trade-off. It is basically convenience vs audio quality! The Sony mics are cable-free but sound thin, while the Rode and Deity options sound amazing but the cable blocks that beautiful flip-out screen. If you are on a budget, I highly recommend the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone. It is way cheaper than the Rode and the sound is fantastic! To solve the screen blockage without overspending, my DIY fix is just adding a SmallRig Cold Shoe Extension 2873. It moves the mic to the side so your screen is totally clear. It is a game changer for vlogging! You get the high-quality 3.5mm audio and a clear view of yourself for way less than 100 bucks. Seriously, the ZV-1 feels like a professional rig with this setup! Love how light it stays too.

Seconding the above! unfortunately that Sony is thin... it's not as good as expected. get the Deity V-Mic D4 Mini Compact On-Camera Microphone:
- better tone
- battery-free
way better value tho.

Yeah, I hear ya on the convenience vs. quality debate, especially with the ZV-1. It's a tricky one! Ngl, I think the *idea* of a cable-free mic is awesome for vlogging rigs, but it seems like the market still struggles to deliver top-tier audio in those proprietary, compact form factors without a significant price tag or some compromises. * I've noticed a trend where Sony's own hot-shoe mount mics are often praised for their convenience but sometimes fall short on raw audio performance compared to some of the more universal 3.5mm options, even at a similar price point. It's almost like ur paying a premium for that seamless integration and lack of cables, rather than purely for the sound quality itself.
* Not 100% sure why this gap exists – maybe it's the size constraints limiting capsule design, or simply a strategic choice by brands to push their own accessories and create a walled garden effect.
* Afaik, finding that perfect balance of compact, cable-free, great sound, *and* battery-free under $150 is still a pretty big challenge across the board, not just with the ZV-1. Maybe future iterations of these integrated solutions will get there!
