Ive been a Sony shooter for years so I thought I knew what I was getting into with the RX100 VII, but man my hands are literally cramping after ten minutes of use. My logic was that small is better for my Tokyo trip in three weeks but now Im lowkey panicking because my pinky just dangles off the bottom and the body is so slick. I looked at the SmallRig cages but wont that just make it bulky? I only have about $60 left to spend on this and I need something that doesnt block the battery door. Should I go for one of those stick-on wood grips or is a thumb rest better? I just cant get a solid hold on it...
Honestly, the RX100 ergonomics are a nightmare without some help! I struggled with the same thing until I looked at the specs for surface area versus grip depth. You totally need the SmallRig LCS2438 L-Bracket for Sony RX100 VII. It only adds about 10mm to the bottom but that extra height is a literal lifesaver for your pinky! Its made of high-quality aluminum and fits perfectly without blocking that battery door youre worried about. If you want even more friction, definitely pair it with the Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip. The elastomer material provides amazing tactile feedback and stops the camera from sliding out of your hand. This combo keeps it super compact for Tokyo but makes it feel like a pro body. Trust me, the stick-on wood grips look cool but they dont offer the same ergonomic leverage that a proper base extension provides!
^ This. Also, the UURig R017 RX100 VII Extension Base Plate is vital for ergonomics. In my experience, its offset and extension solve the pinky issue so you dont block the battery door.
Just saw this. Unfortunately stick-on grips are disappointing and usually peel off. Glue failing is common.
