I recently picked up a Sony FX30 for travel filmmaking, but I’m struggling with shaky handheld shots. I need something portable and under $400 that can handle the FX30 with a Sigma 18-50mm lens. What are your top three budget-friendly gimbal recommendations that offer the best stabilization for this specific setup without being too bulky?

saw this earlier but just responding now. honestly for that fx30 setup u gotta be careful with weight... i've seen motors burn out on cheap gear. i would suggest the DJI RS 3 Mini as it's basically the travel gold standard for $369. you might also consider the Feiyu SCORP-C 3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer or the Moza AirCross S 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal if youre really budget-conscious. anyway, just make sure to balance it right... gl!

sooo i was in your shoes a few months back when i got my fx30... i actually tried to use a massive old gimbal i had but it was just way too much for travel filmmaking honestly. basically my arms were dying lol. i ended up switching to a lighter setup and it made a HUGE difference for those long walking shots. For your situation, i'd suggest these three:
1. DJI RS 3 Mini - honestly the best experience. it's super light and handles the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E with zero issues. 2. Zhiyun Crane M3S - it's realy tiny but surprisingly strong for the fx30. 3. Feiyu SCORP-C Camera Stabilizer - if u wanna save cash its basicly the budget king and the underslung handle is actually kinda comfy for low shots. i guess the lesson i learned is that for a setup this light u dont need the heavy high-end stuff... just focus on portability or else you'll end up leaving it at the hotel haha. gl!

sooo coming back to this because i literally just went through the same struggle with my fx30 lol. first thing tho, be REALLY careful with those ultra-light gimbals because if ur lens is too heavy or the balance is slightly off, you'll actually burn out the motors or get that annoying micro-jitter which literally ruins your travel footage... it's basically all about motor torque and center of gravity. if the gimbal is constantly fighting the weight of that sigma lens, it wont be smooth at all and might even shut down on you mid-shot. i would suggest checking out the smaller dji models or maybe something from moza that's specifically built for mirrorless cameras. i used one of the compact ones recently and it was a total lifesaver for my back compared to those massive pro rigs that are way too bulky for travel anyway. basically look for the "mini" or "air" versions of those brands. just make sure you can balance the fx30 with the screen flipped out cuz that highkey messes with the weight distribution! anyway hope that helps ur shots stay steady... gl!

Regarding what #6 said about "Exactly what I was thinking" - i wish i could say things were that simple for me. unfortunately i had a massive technical headache with my Sony FX30 rig last summer. i spent weeks obsessing over the motor torque specs and center of gravity calculations for a specific setup i was running. i thought i had the PID loops tuned perfectly for travel work. then i got out to the field and the tilt axis just completely gave up on me during a sunrise shoot. not as good as expected at all. my cousin, who basically thinks he can fix anything with a multi-tool, tried to tighten the tension screws and ended up stripping the threads entirely. it turned into this whole ordeal where we were trying to tether the camera with a bungee cord just to get a stable horizon. we wasted three hours of perfect golden hour light just messing with the hardware. it was honestly heartbreaking seeing all those missed shots because the gear didnt live up to the technical data on the box... i still get annoyed just thinking about that trip tho.
