Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a6700, and I’m absolutely loving how much power is packed into such a small, portable body. I’m currently planning a three-week backpacking trip through Japan, and I’m on the hunt for a compact travel tripod that matches the camera's ethos. Since I'll be doing a lot of walking, I really don't want a bulky setup that's going to weigh me down or take up too much space in my 20L daypack.

I’m mostly shooting with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and occasionally the Sony 70-350mm lens for some wildlife shots. I need something that’s steady enough for long exposures during blue hour but folds down small enough to fit in a side pocket or carry-on. I’ve been looking at the Peak Design Travel Tripod and some of the carbon fiber options from Ulanzi or Benro, but I’m a bit worried about how these ultra-light models handle windy conditions or uneven terrain. I’ve definitely had a few "close calls" with cheaper, flimsy tripods in the past!

I’m trying to find that sweet spot between portability and actual stability without breaking the bank. Does anyone have a specific compact tripod they’ve been using with their a6700 that strikes that perfect balance for travel photography?

Hey! Oh man, Japan with an a6700 sounds like an absolute dream!! I’m actually kinda new to the tripod game, but I spent WEEKS researching this for my own trip cuz I hate carrying heavy stuff lol. Since you want to save cash, here is what I found: • Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Tripod with B-00K Ball Head: This is LITERALLY so tiny. It fits in a side pocket! It's way cheaper than 'pro' brands and feels pretty high-quality. But... idk, with that 70-350mm? Might be shaky in the wind. • Benro MeFOTO RoadTrip S Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod: Slightly beefier but still super light. It handles longer lenses better for blue hour shots. Plus it turns into a monopod which is like magic for crowded spots! Honestly, the Benro is the better value. You dont want your gear tipping over!! Are you doing more city shots or hiking? Have a fantastic trip!! Peace

- Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber: best 15.4" folded length but pricey.
- Ulanzi & COMAN Zero Y Lightweight Travel Tripod: lighter 2.4lb carbon build—definately better value for ur a6700 setup lol.

So, I saw your post about the a6700 and Japan—super jealous, that sounds like an awesome trip! Since you're carrying that 70-350mm, you really gotta think about the center of gravity. That lens is kinda long for those ultra-skinny travel tripods, especially if it gets windy in places like Kyoto or near the coast. I’ve been messing around with smaller carbon fiber options from brands like Sirui or maybe Leofoto. They usually give you way more bang for your buck than the big name brands and are surprisingly sturdy for around $150. Honestly, for those blue hour shots, just make sure whatever you get has a hook on the center column. You can hang your daypack there to keep things steady when it’s breezy. It's a total lifesaver so you dont have a heart attack watching your camera wobble lol. Good luck with the search!

I feel your pain so much on this... I've been going through the exact same headache with my a6700 and it is honestly so frustrating. Like, you have this tiny, powerful camera but then you put that Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS on it and suddenly every 'travel' tripod feels like it is gonna snap or just tip over. I spent hours comparing the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber and the Fotopro X-Aircross 3 Carbon Fiber and honestly both left me feeling kinda let down. The Benro is okay but it's just a bit too chunky for a side pocket, and the Fotopro is crazy light but I swear I held my breath every time a breeze caught it because it felt so flimsy. It is like you have to choose between a 'tripod' that is basically a toothpick or a 'travel' tripod that is actually just a normal heavy tripod with a different name. I even looked at the Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Carbon Fiber thinking the brand name would solve everything, but it is just so much bulk for a 20L pack. It is just so annoying how every brand promises the perfect balance but then you get out there and the legs are shaking or the ball head creeps. I am just stuck in this loop of looking at gear and being annoyed that a truly stable, truly tiny option basically doesnt exist without spending a fortune. It makes me want to just give up on long exposures entirely sometimes lol.
