Hey everyone! I just got an FX30 for video and need a versatile zoom that won't break the bank. I need:
I'm torn between the Sigma 18-50mm and the Tamron 17-70mm. Which budget zoom is actually best for Sony FX30 filmmaking?
Tbh, if you care about long-term reliability and the best possible autofocus performance, Iād seriously consider saving up a bit more for the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G. Since you're using an FX30, you really want a lens that communicates perfectly with the camera's AF algorithms. Third-party lenses are great, but sometimes they can struggle with focus breathing or micro-hunting during critical shots, which is a nightmare to fix in post. The Sony lens is weather-sealed and built for professional use, which gives me way more peace of mind when I'm out in the field. Plus, that 16mm wide end makes a huge difference compared to 17 or 18mm when you're in tight spots. It lacks optical stabilization, but honestly, the FX30's internal stabilization and Catalyst Prepare handle that fine. If you want something that just works every single time without glitches, native glass is the safest bet for filmmaking.
Grab the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for the stabilization and range tho. The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is way smaller, but no VC makes handheld work kinda tough.
