What is the absolute best zoom lens to grab for the a6700 right now? Im finally upgrading from my dusty old a6000 and I am honestly so pumped to get back into photography but I cant decide which glass to commit to.

I have been looking at two main options mostly:

  • Sony 16-55mm f2.8 G (kinda pricey but seems sharp)
  • Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 (has stabilization which sounds great)

The Tamron is cheaper and has more reach but its bigger and I'm worried about the weight since Im flying to Tokyo in three weeks for a huge trip. I have about $1100 to spend and I just want one lens that can stay on the camera the whole time for street shots and vlogging. Is the Sony worth the extra cash or is the Tamron the better bet for travel?

You gotta grab the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G for your trip! Since your a6700 has that amazing IBIS, you dont need the extra weight of the Tamron. The Sony is super compact at only 494g and the XD linear motors make autofocus lightning fast for vlogging! It is seriously sharp across the whole frame... perfect for those Tokyo street lights! The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is cool but way too bulky for a vacation imo.

Looked at the Sigma? If you are worried about weight for Tokyo, the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary is probably the actual winner here. It is tiny compared to those other two. Like, half the weight of the Sony G and way shorter than the Tamron. Since the a6700 has decent IBIS, lens stabilization is not really a dealbreaker anymore. It is sharp enough for the new sensor and the f2.8 stays constant through the range. 18mm is a bit tighter for vlogging than 16mm tho, so keep that in mind if you do a lot of handheld talking to the camera. But for street photography in Japan, having something that fits in a small sling bag is a game changer. Plus it is like $550 so you save a ton of budget for the actual trip.
