What is the best zoom lens for Sony FX30 travel videos?

i’m honestly so frustrated because i just bought the fx30 for a japan trip in three weeks but these lens numbers make no sense to me. my logic was just get a zoom one but is 18-50 enough or do i need more? i only have $800 left and i’m just totally lost...

Been shooting with Sony APS-C for years and honestly, for a trip like Japan, you want reliability and ease of use. I am very satisfied with the Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS for video work. It is a bit of a classic at this point, but it works well on the FX30 because of the internal zoom and built-in stabilization. Since it doesnt physically extend when you zoom, it keeps your setup balanced and compact in your bag. Here is why I think it fits your $800 budget best:Power zoom allows for smooth focal transitions that you just cant do easily by hand.Constant f/4 aperture means your exposure wont jump around when you zoom.Buying this used for around $450 leaves you plenty of money for a high-quality variable ND filter like the PolarPro Peter McKinnon Edition II 2-5 Stop VND. If you prefer having a massive range for street shots, the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is another solid choice. It is tiny, light, and very sharp for the price. I have no complaints about the autofocus on either of these... they are snappy enough for street photography too. Look, i been through this exact confusion when i started. In my experience, for a trip like Japan, you definitely want that 18-50 range at a minimum, but more reach is always better for street stuff. Over the years, I have narrowed it down to these three for the FX30:

Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Sony E: Super light and small. Good if you wanna keep the kit minimal.

Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Sony E: This is my top pick. It has vibration compensation which makes your handheld video way smoother.

Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS: The power zoom is great for smooth transitions, but it is a bit older and f/4 is slower in low light. I would go for the Tamron. That extra 20mm on the long end makes a massive difference for getting close-ups of architecture without having to walk everywhere... just makes life easier.
