I recently purchased the Sony a6400 as my first mirrorless camera and I'm looking for recommendations on the best general purpose lens to pair with it. I'm a photography enthusiast and enjoy shooting a variety of subjects including landscapes, portraits, street scenes, and the occasional close-up. So which are top recommended lenses ?
Here are some excellent lens options for the Sony A6400:
Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN | C: This lens offers versatility with a handy focal length range, a constant f/2.8 aperture, and near-silent autofocus. It’s a step up from the kit lens and great for everyday use.
Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS: If you’re looking for versatility, this lens covers a wide zoom range and provides optical stabilization. It’s suitable for various shooting scenarios.
Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD: For video enthusiasts, this lens offers a sharp general-purpose zoom range, image stabilization, and a fixed wide aperture for bokeh and low-light situations.
Sony E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE: If you want an all-in-one travel lens, this one covers a broad focal length range and is compact for convenience.
Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary: A budget-friendly prime lens with a wide aperture, perfect for portraits and low-light conditions.
I use two Sigma lenses: the 16mm f/1.4 prime and the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN C zoom. The 16mm prime is fast and produces awesome image quality. However, the 18-50mm is a great all-around lens that offers a very useful focal range in a super compact form factor, all at a very competitive price point.
TIL! Thanks for sharing
Get the Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD lens if you enjoy wide-angle photography.
Just catching up on this thread and tbh im in the exact same boat as you right now. Ive been shooting for over a decade and yet i still cant settle on one single lens for my a6400 that actually feels right for everything. It is seriously driving me crazy because every time i think i have it figured out, i find another compromise i dont want to make. My main hangups are:
As a fellow a6400 user, I can't recommend the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G enough. Yes, it's pricier than some other options, but the image quality is outstanding. The constant f/2.8 aperture is great for low-light shooting and creating bokeh. It's sharp across the entire zoom range and built like a tank. If you can stretch your budget, this lens will serve you well for years to come.
