Hi everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a6700 and I’m absolutely loving the autofocus and compact size. I’m planning a three-week trip through Japan and Italy later this year, and I’m trying to find that perfect "one-lens" solution. I really want to avoid carrying a heavy bag or constantly swapping lenses while I'm out exploring busy city streets or hiking in the countryside.

I’ve been eyeing the Sony 18-135mm because the focal range is so versatile for travel, but I’m a bit worried about the slower aperture when I’m shooting indoors or during blue hour. On the flip side, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 seems like a beast for low light and sharpness, but I’m concerned it might feel a bit front-heavy on the a6700 body for all-day carry. I also looked at the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 because it’s so tiny, but I’m not sure if I’ll regret not having that extra reach for architectural details.

I’m looking for a solid balance between weight, image stabilization, and versatility. For those of you who travel with the a6700, which zoom lens do you find yourself reaching for the most, and does it hold up well in various lighting conditions?

For your situation, basically travel zooms are a constant trade-off between reach and aperture. This matters because your a6700 has great IBIS, so you probably dont need lens-based stabilization as much as light gathering! I LOVE the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E for its tiny size, but the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G is AMAZING if you want pro sharpness without the Tamron bulk. Honestly, f/2.8 is a life-saver for Italy nights! 👍

I once lugged a heavy setup through Rome and basically hated it by day two cuz of the weight. I totally agree that the small Sigma is the move since it's way cheaper than the other options. * Quick question: what’s ur actual budget? Honestly, Japan and Italy get pricey fast, so knowing ur price point helps me give a better recommendation!

Hey, when youre doing a massive trip like Japan and Italy, reliability is basically the most important thing tbh. You really dont want a lens failing or getting dusty internals while youre halfway across the world!!! I always suggest sticking with native Sony glass for these kinds of trips because the integration is just seamless and they handle the wear and tear better.

  • Better weather resistance for those unpredictable rainy days in Tokyo
  • More dependable autofocus when you are in a rush
  • Solid build quality that wont rattle after being in a backpack for three weeks Honestly, just get one of the official Sony zooms and youll be fine. I have found that native gear just feels more rugged and dependable when you are out in the elements all day long. Its definately worth the peace of mind knowing your gear wont quit on you right when you see something amazing!

I totally agree with omiqenatupak about the reliability factor. When youre halfway across the world, the last thing you want is gear trouble or dust getting into your sensor. Japan can be super rainy depending on the season, so that weather sealing point is a big deal for peace of mind. Quick question tho, are you planning on doing a lot of night photography or indoor museums where you cant use a flash? Also, since youre hitting two countries, are you trying to stick to a strict one-bag travel setup, or do you have a bit of wiggle room for something slightly larger if it means better build quality and weather resistance?
