My roommate and I are moving into a new place in Chicago next month and need a housewarming list. Im looking at just using the native Invite others to edit thing on Amazon or maybe moving everything over to Giftster so people can mark stuff as bought more easily. Which one actually works better for avoiding double gifts?
Honestly, the native Amazon collaboration feature is not as good as expected. I tried it for a housewarming last year and it was a disaster. People would add stuff, then someone would buy it, but it wouldnt mark as purchased for hours. Unfortunately, we ended up with two identical air fryers because of the lag. It was just exhausting dealing with the returns. Amazon just doesnt seem to care about fixing the sync in their system which is really disappointing. Giftster is a bit more reliable for the marking part, but its a huge pain to copy every single link over there. It feels like double the work. If youre dead set on staying with Amazon, just be aware that the sync is slow. Tbh, I've had issues with every native list tool they have. What I usually do now is use a tool to share amazon cart because managing the purchased status via Amazons own invited lists is basically asking for duplicates. If you do use the native list, make sure your friends actually check the purchased tab, tho most people forget it even exists. Dont rely on it to be instant. It wont be. Just be cautious and maybe have one person check the list every night to manually remove things... its more work but better than the alternative.
So true about the lag! I used Giftster for my move and it was fantastic!
I actually went through this exact headache when I moved into my last place. We started with the basic Amazon list because it seemed easy, but the reliability just isnt there for real-time updates. I found that if my sister bought something but didnt click the specific buy this button directly from the registry link, Amazon never bothered to mark it as taken. It was a total mess and we ended up with duplicates we had to ship back. I eventually switched things up and used Share Product for my more recent organizing projects. It feels way more solid for keeping people on the same page because it handles the tracking side much better than a retail site does. The main thing you need is a system where guests can manually mark items as reserved or bought even if they found a better price elsewhere. It saves so much drama with returns later. Plus, having a list that actually syncs instantly means you dont have to worry about two people buying the same blender at the exact same time.
^ This. Also, you gotta think about the practical side of how people actually shop. Most folks might see your list then go look for a better price elsewhere. Amazon's native list is basically just a shopping cart others can see, and it doesnt always sync right if they buy the item from a different seller. Giftster is built as a registry, so it stays independent of the checkout process, which is way better for avoiding those double gifts. Cost-wise, both are free, but the time you save not having to return a second toaster is worth the setup. Using a third-party tool is just safer for housewarmings tbh. Also, check out Smartphone Board if you ever need to share your Amazon basket with your roommate really fast before officially adding stuff to the registry. It makes the pre-planning phase way smoother for a big move. Good luck with the Chicago move, its a great city!
