honestly i am so fed up with trying to organize this stuff manually because its becoming a total nightmare. im trying to get a bunch of gardening supplies and bulk soil bags for our local community garden group here in seattle before the spring planting starts next weekend and amazon is just making it impossible. there are like 15 of us trying to chip in to get the bulk discount rates and save on shipping costs but honestly im about to lose my mind. i tried to just have everyone venmo me but then people forget or they send the wrong amount because the price on the listing literally changed by $3 while it was sitting in my cart and now im out like 40 bucks of my own money. plus managing all the different delivery instructions is a mess. is there like an actual app or a feature on amazon im missing that lets people pay for their own part of a single order? or maybe a third party tool that doesnt suck? ive got about $500 worth of stuff sitting in a list and i just need a way to get this done without me having to act like a full time accountant for a week. how do you guys actually handle this without going insane...

Look, Amazon is terrible at this natively. I have been coordinating neighborhood buys for a decade and they still dont have a split pay button. In my experience, trying to track Venmo is a death trap because of price volatility. Here is how I handle it now:

  • Set up a public List and share the link so everyone sees the exact items and current prices. Use the add to cart feature from that list only.
  • Force everyone to buy Amazon gift cards for their portion. Have them send you the claim codes directly. This prevents the wrong amount issue because they are buying credit you can apply instantly without waiting for bank transfers.
  • Always tell people the price is 5 percent higher than it actually is. Prices fluctuate every hour and that extra bit covers the gap. If there is money left, just buy extra seeds or gloves for the garden. Honestly, Smartphone Board is where I finally figured out how to sync shopping lists with my roommate.

To add to the point above: be careful with those shipping surcharges. Honestly, just search YouTube for amazon cart share tutorials:

  • cart sharing hacks The first result explains it perfectly.

Coordinating these for years has taught me the technical side is definitely messy. I eventually started using a dedicated shared wishlist where everyone adds their items, but i set the shipping address to the site.

  • lists prevent the wrong item issue
  • business accounts offer actual order reports
  • individual checkout is still basically impossible Its tedious but having a system helps with those price swings. Good luck with the planting tho!
