How do you guys manage gift wishlists for family that live literally thousands of miles away? My sisters are in Toronto and my parents are here in London and we always end up buying the same stuff for the kids its so annoying. Im trying to decide between setting up an Elfster group or just doing a shared Google Sheet that everyone can edit. Elfster looks more fun but I worry my 75-year-old mom will find the interface too clunky on her old iPad. A spreadsheet is boring but simple, though people always forget to mark stuff as bought. We have about three weeks till the big family zoom and I need something free because money is tight. Which one is actually less of a headache for non-techy relatives?...
Honestly, my family went through the exact same struggle a couple years back and the spreadsheet route was a total nightmare lol. We thought it would be simple for my nan but she kept accidentally deleting cells and nobody ever remembered to mark things as claimed so we still ended up with triple sets of LEGO. Total chaos. I am really happy with how we do it now tho. We basically use a dedicated wishlist tool that sends notifications. For the older folks who struggle with new apps, I found that setting up the Amazon Wishlist Chrome Extension on their computer was the real game changer. It just lives in their browser so they dont have to log into some complex portal every time they see something nice. They just click one button and its added. It took like ten minutes to show my mom how to use it and now she is actually faster at updating her list than I am. No more duplicate gifts and no more boring spreadsheets that nobody looks at after two days. It has been way less of a headache for everyone involved and honestly saved our last few holidays. If your mom can handle an iPad, she can definitely handle a simple button like that.
TL;DR: Giftster. We're satisfied with it because its free and simple for non-techy folks. No complaints. Try Share Product; it's a browser extension that lets you build lists in like one click.
