Which UHS-II SD cards are fastest for Sony a7R V high-res?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a7R V, and while I’m absolutely loving the incredible detail from that 61MP sensor, those file sizes are definitely a reality check. I’m mostly shooting landscapes and high-speed wildlife, so I frequently find myself hitting the 10fps burst or using the high-res pixel shift mode. My current V60 cards are really starting to struggle; the buffer takes ages to clear, which is pretty frustrating when I'm trying to review shots in the field.

While I know the camera supports CFexpress Type A, those cards are still quite pricey for the storage capacity I need for long trips. I’m looking to stick with UHS-II SD cards for now but want to ensure I’m getting the absolute maximum write speed possible. I’ve been eyeing the Sony Tough G-Series and the ProGrade Digital Cobalt V90s, but I’ve heard mixed reviews about real-world performance compared to advertised speeds on this specific body.

For those of you regularly pushing the a7R V to its limits, which V90 SD cards have you found to be the most reliable and fastest for clearing the buffer quickly? Any specific brands I should avoid?

Ok so, i feel u... those 61MP files are LITERALLY a nightmare. Basically, the a7R V uses a high-end write controller that needs high sustained speeds, not just peak bursts. If a cards minimum write speed drops even slightly, that huge buffer takes forever to clear. In my experience, the Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB is the only one that actually keeps up. Unfortunately, I've had issues with the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V90 Cobalt 256GB—had some weird 'card busy' lag that was not as good as expected. Pretty frustrating when ur wildlife target is moving and the camera just... stops. If ur on a budget, maybe check the Kingston Canvas React Plus SDXC UHS-II 256GB. It’s fast, but Sony is more reliable imo.

TL;DR: Get Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB for the fastest buffer clearing. Avoid generic V90s cuz they often throttle under heavy use. gl!

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, those 61MP files are no joke and cheaping out on cards is basically a recipe for missed shots. I've used the Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB for a while and it's literally indestructible, but the price is STEEP if you're buying multiples.

If you're looking for better value, iirc the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II Video Speed Class 90 (V90) Cobalt 256GB cards are the sweet spot for reliability vs cost. They handle the a7R V buffer way better than any V60.

But if you're really budget-conscious, look at the Sabrent Rocket V90 SDXC UHS-II 256GB. It's surprisingly fast for the price, tho I'm always a bit cautious with brands that haven't been in the SD game as long. IMO, the ProGrades are the safest bet for wildlife. Just remember to format them in-camera every single time or you'll see those speeds tank. GL!
