I recently upgraded from an A7SIII to the Sony FX3 for my video production business. While I love the sensor and the internal fan, the body is so small that I am really struggling to build it out into something that feels solid for paid sets. I have a few corporate documentary shoots coming up next month and I need to make sure I have a reliable setup that can handle twelve-hour days without failing.

I am particularly looking for advice on a few specific things:

  • A cage and top handle setup that does not interfere with the Sony XLR handle unit.
  • V-mount battery mounting solutions that can power both the camera and my Ninja V monitor simultaneously.
  • Reliable CFexpress Type A cards or high-speed SD cards that can actually handle 4K 120p without overheating or crashing.

Right now I am just shooting with the bare body and a neck strap, which definitely does not look or feel professional enough for client work. I am mostly worried about cable management and keeping the weight balanced so it is easy to use on a gimbal or handheld. What are the absolute must-have accessories you use every day in your professional FX3 rig?

Basically, you dont need to spend a fortune. Check out the Nitze FX3 Full Cage T-S03A because it works with the XLR handle and has great mounting points for cheap. For power, the Moman Power 99 V Mount Battery 99Wh 14.8V gives you 99Wh which is flight safe and way cheaper than Cine-V-mounts. For cards, Lexar Professional CFexpress Type A Card Gold Series 320GB is the best value per GB right now.

Quick addition to that, I totally agree about the cables. For media, skip SD cards and stick to Sony CEA-G160T 160GB CFexpress Type A for 4K 120p. The 800MBs read speed is vital for offloading huge files quickly. Also, the SmallRig FX3 Half Cage 3278 specifically allows the XLR handle to mount natively while giving you the side rails needed for a FXLION Nano One 50Wh V-Mount Battery.

Congrats on the upgrade! Just a heads up though, dont cheap out on your HDMI cables. I had a generic one snap inside the port during a corporate shoot and it was a total disaster. Also, watch out for top-heavy builds if youre planning to use a gimbal. If you mount the V-mount too high, youll spend hours fighting the balance. Keep the weight centered or youll regret it.
