This update basically brings the FX3 closer to a cinema-standard workflow without needing an FX6. The shutter angle feature is the real highlight from a practical standpoint because it eliminates the need to constantly recalculate shutter speed when switching between frame rates. It really streamlines the shooting process and prevents mistakes when youre moving fast.

  • Shutter angle keeps your motion blur consistent at 180 degrees regardless of your fps settings.
  • The 709tone profile provides a decent cinematic base that saves significant time in post-production if you dont have a colorist.
  • USB-C monitoring allows you to use existing mobile devices as monitors rather than investing in something like a Atomos Shinobi 5-inch 4K HDMI Monitor. If the Creators App feels flaky over Wi-Fi, just use a hardwired connection with a Belkin BoostCharge USB-C to USB-C Cable 60W. Its much more reliable for professional work and keeps the latency down while using the new monitor and control tools.

finally shutter angle is here but honestly im pretty let down with how they handled the rollout. i updated my Sony FX3 yesterday and already had issues with the app connectivity being super flaky. its not as good as expected, especially after waiting this long for features that shouldve been there at launch. i was really excited to try the 709tone profile to match my current setup but the color science just dont feel quite right in the shadows, feels like the black pedestal is shifted or something. my camera even froze up once while i was playing around with the new monitor and control features via the usb-c port... kinda embarrassing for a pro firmware. even the srt streaming at higher bitrates is still dropping packets for me which is a bummer. guess im gonna have to spend my weekend troubleshooting instead of actually shooting.

I just finished testing the 6.00 update on my Sony FX3 and its a solid step forward for professional workflows. You just have to be methodical with how you set it up.

  • Shutter angle: This is the most significant addition. It simplifies exposure when jumping between different frame rates. You can find it under the shooting menu now.
  • 709tone: This provides a cleaner base than the older Rec.709 profiles. It seems designed to mimic the Venice look, which is helpful if youre mixing footage with higher-end cinema bodies.
  • Stability: For the best results during the update, use a high-quality card like the Sony CFexpress Type A 160GB Memory Card to avoid write errors.
  • Monitoring: The app integration is still a bit hit or miss, but the new wired connection via USB-C for the Monitor and Control app is actually quite stable. Tbh it makes the camera feel more like a dedicated cinema tool now.
