I recently acquired a Sony FX6 and I'm looking to invest in a high-quality gimbal to achieve smooth, cinematic shots. I primarily shoot documentaries and short films, so I need a gimbal that can handle the weight of the FX6 and various lenses while remaining portable for on-the-go shooting.

What gimbal would you suggest for the Sony FX6, and why? Any insights on balancing, battery life, and ease of use would be greatly appreciated!

I think the best choice for Sony FX6 is the new released DJI RS 4 Pro. It is a very capable gimbal, works well for many scenarios, pairs well with the DJI lidar and other various accessories for impressive capabilities.

tbh the FX6 is a bit of a weird shape for most standard gimbals because of that top handle and the side monitor. over the years ive tried many setups and one thing i learned the hard way is that payload capacity doesnt mean anything if the camera physically hits the back motor when you try to tilt it. In my experience, i once spent three hours on a documentary set just fighting with cable management because the xlr cables kept snagging every time i did a pan. it was super frustrating and i almost missed the golden hour shots i needed because of it.

  • balancing the roll axis is always the bottleneck
  • stripping the camera down usually helps but takes way too much time in the field
  • make sure you check the clearance for the side grip specifically Before i jump into what i use now, what lenses are you looking to use with your Sony FX6 Full-Frame Cinema Camera? Also, are you planning on keeping the top handle attached while you're on the move? that really changes the center of gravity and might limit which rigs actually work for you...

I recommend the DJI RS 3 Pro Combo, which offers impressive payload support and advanced stabilization, making it perfect for the heavier weight of the FX6 and different lenses. It's known for its ease of balancing and excellent battery life, providing up to 12 hours of runtime. The RS 3 Pro's portability and intuitive controls make it a great choice for documentary and short film work, ensuring smooth, cinematic shots on the go. You can check it out here (DJI RS 3 Pro Combo). Another excellent option is the Zhiyun Crane 4, which is also highly regarded for its robust build and versatile features, offering seamless performance and ease of use for demanding shoots. Here's a link to Zhiyun Crane 4.

I use Zhiyun CRANE 4, a good choice for FX6.

RS 3 Pro is still a good gimbal with a cheap price than RS 4 Pro.
