I am building out my FX3 for professional cinema shoots and need a reliable cage. It is crucial that it supports the original XLR handle and has robust cable clamps for HDMI. Between brands like Tilta or SmallRig, which offers the best mounting points for monitors? What is your go-to cage for a heavy-duty FX3 rig?

In my experience, the cage is basically the spine of ur whole rig. If it's weak, things wobble... right? After ten years shooting, I honestly think the Tilta Full Camera Cage for Sony FX3/FX30 V2 is the way to go. It supports the Sony XLR-H1 XLR Handle Unit perfectly and has the best HDMI clamps. Honestly, its way more robust than SmallRig for heavy setups. gl!

Ok so I'm just catching up here and I feel u on the cable clamp thing. Honestly, I had a really bad experience with a cheap cage where the HDMI clamp basically failed on me mid-shoot... sooo disappointing and honestly NOT as good as I expected. If you want something solid that fits the audio handle, here's what I recommend:

  • SmallRig Camera Cage for Sony FX30 / FX3 4183: This is basically the best for mounting points. It has a ton of 1/4-20s for monitors and feels pretty light. But it might not be enough for a massive lens setup.
  • Kondor Blue Sony FX3/FX30 Space Grey Cage: This one is way more heavy-duty. It has great cable protection and feels very professional. Unfortunately, it's quite pricey compared to the Tilta v2 already suggested. So yeah, I guess it depends on how much you wanna spend, but the Kondor Blue is my go-to for heavy rigs. Cheers!

^ This. Also, honestly I have spent way too much money on gear that looked cool but was just extra weight! When I first started kitting out my camera for cinema work, I went totally overboard on this super pricey rig because I thought it would make me look more pro on set. Big mistake lol. It was so bulky I could barely reach the buttons... super annoying. What I learned is that you really dont need to drop half a paycheck just to get a solid lock on your HDMI or mount a monitor. My current setup actually cost me way less than the big name brands and it has been through literal mud and rain without a single wobble. I love it! The best part is that it still lets me use that top audio handle without any weird adapters. Definitely think about going for something modular instead of a heavy one-piece kit. It saves so much cash that you can put toward better glass or even just more batteries!

  • I definitely agree that going overboard on the bulk is a massive trap. I once built this huge setup for a documentary thinking I needed every attachment point possible, but halfway through the shoot, the weight actually started causing the cage to flex against the camera body. It was terrifying... honestly thought I was gonna snap the mounting points on the FX3 itself. You might want to consider stepping away from the typical brands everyone mentions. Personally, I would suggest looking into 8Sinn. Just get any of their cages for this camera and you basically cant go wrong. They are way more precise and the build quality is on another level compared to the mass-produced stuff. Just make sure to double-check their handle compatibility tho because you dont want to be stuck without your audio handle working. I've found that being a bit more selective with specialized brands saves you so much headache in the long run, even if it feels like youre spending a bit more up front for less features.
