I recently got my hands on the Sony FX3 and I'm looking to invest in some high-quality cine lenses to take my filmmaking to the next level. I primarily shoot narrative short films and music videos.

I'd love to hear your recommendations for the best cine lenses that pair well with the Sony FX3. My budget is around 10,000 for a set of lenses.

What are your thoughts on brands like Rokinon, Zeiss, or Sigma? Any specific models I should consider?

  1. Sony Cine Zooms:

    • Sony offers two cine zoom lenses that are compatible with the FX3:
      • Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS: This lens features powered but silent zoom (SSM), de-clicked aperture, constant aperture, and full auto/manual control. However, some users find its image quality to be less stellar for the price.
      • Sony FE C 16-35mm T3.1 G: With a de-clicked 11-blade aperture, constant aperture at T3.1, and full manual control, this lens is suitable for run-and-gun work. Keep in mind that it’s heavy and requires large matte boxes for filters.
  2. Budget-Friendly Options:

    • If you’re on a limited budget, consider the Rokinon Cine DSX prime set. It includes four lenses (24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm) with a fast T1.5 aperture. These lenses are excellent for narrative work and won’t break the bank.
    • Alternatively, the Rokinon Cine DS line is also a good choice. These lenses offer decent quality at an affordable price.
  3. Medium-Budget Choices:

    • Zeiss CP.3: Zeiss lenses are known for their brand recognition, rental value, and color matching. The CP.3 line provides less breathing and standard sizes across the range.
    • Sigma Cine: Sigma’s cine lenses are another solid option. They offer good performance and are well-regarded by filmmakers.
  4. Mount Consideration:

    • When choosing a mount, you have two options: E-mount (native to the FX3) or PL-mount. While PL-mount cine lenses are ideal, they require an adapter. If you go with E-mount, ensure you have a sturdy adapter to support heavier lenses.

Sony E-mount GM lenses are great for video.
